Scumball rally, vehicle aquired!
In surprisingly similar circumstances, I had to find a vehicle to use on the scumball rally
My first thought was to do something different from last year (and the Carlton GSI 3000 24V that yealded good results), specifically I wanted not one car, but three. Three minis. One red, one white and one blue.
I really wanted to "itallian job" the scumball, but when I looked into it, I saw a lot of problems. The cars themselves are getting quite saught after and as one of the rules of the rally is you're not allowed to spend more than 500 on the car you use, it became quickly obvious that I was not going to find a running car for that amount.
Back to square one then. My thoughts quickly turned to another carlton GSI. However it quickly emerged that cars were thin on the ground. Age, enthusiastic drivers and a limited amount of cars in the first place (less than 1000 were built in 24v manual guise IIRC) meant I had to find the modern equivilent. The Omega to be specific.
I never liked the omegas, visually they dont hold a candle to the carlton and the engines are never as powerful as the GSi 24V. Except the MV6.
The MV6 is equipped with a 3 litre V6 engine. Putting out 211bhp as well. If that wasnt enough then the ex police versions were equipped with an LSD. But it was when I looked on ebay and say several going for around 500 quid that I really sat up and took notice.
So here it is. A T reg ex police Omega MV6, with 172k on the clock, in white, with an LSD and 11 months MOT. For 500 quid.
To say i'm chuffed is an understatement, I even have a spare set of 17's to put on it. they were going to go on the carlton, but I couldnt get tyres sorted in time. They will make the omega look much more handsome, I feel.
I'm going to flail this car round europe next year. Can't wait

nate, wrong scumball, thats the plastic one, the one not endorsed by the gumball rally
try this, this is the one I'm entering.
Flash Intro
Last years prices broke down as follows
Car - 200
Car prep - 500 (but 400 of that was welding)
entry - 100 per person (minimum of 2 persons per team)
ferry crossing - 65
costs on rally including fuel and camping 200 (per person)
final donation to charity 50 ( per person adding to funds raised from selling the car)
astraboy.

Scooby Regular
Yeah, he seems like a good bloke. From an email I got from him yesterday, he's off looking at the route in Europe at the moment.
Really looking forward to the event
