Question Audi A4 1.8T (2003) - Any good?

My company are selling off some of the company cars and there is a 03 Audi A4 1.8T for sale - are they any good?
Has anyone on here modded one before?

I reckon I could pick it quite cheap, mileage is around 35k and obviously it has a full service history.

Any positive or negative comments and advice welcome.

Cheers
Steve

Easy to tune, bland handling, good economy, nice place to sit.

Which trim level? SE, Sport etc.

As long as it is manual, it should be fine. Cheap to run too as i think they are variable servicing.

It's a manual, not sure of the exact model (it has leather and aircon/climate so would that make it an SE?).

Is the handling really that bad? Would new shocks/springs make a worthwhile difference?

I think it's the 163bhp model, I guess increased boost and breathing mods would be the most cheap and effective start for mods? Is the engine strong enough without changing internals?

I've checked the insurance and around €650 fully comp protected so not too bad.

Springs will make it stiffer but they are nose heavy cars with FWD and light steering. They aren't sports cars but good cruisers.

They all have climate. Could be either SE or Sport with leather having been chosen as an option. The sport ones have slightly different alloys to the SE.

The handling isnt that bad at all - I have a 2002 model and IMO handling is very good, its just that its 2nd best to the 3-series. Isnt much steering feel, but other than that its good - you can still have some fun on a nice A/B road!

1.8T will be 163bhp in that, but easy to chip to about 190bhp. Much more will require a new turbo, but then you can get 275bhp quite reliably.

Is it an 8P (new style) or 8L (old style)?

I got an 8L last week and really liking it. They come in 150 and 180 bhp flavours, easy to get to 210 ish for 4-500 notes depending on generic or individual mapping.

Thanks everyone.

I've had a look on the Revo site and it's £399 for their remap, which gives around 195bhp/225ftlb.
Race-Tune also do a remap giving around 206bhp/290ftlb

I'm going to have a proper look over it next week and see it they'll let me take it for a few days to try it out

Take a look at Jabba, that's where I'll be going for a custom remap.

I wouldn't want a generic map on an older car.
