They put 4 tonnes of ballast into the VW!
"A theoretical towing capability in excess of 200 tonnes was calculated by multiplying the 553 lbs ft of torque generated by the V10 TDI engine through the standard transmission's lowest ratio and without taking into account the torque multiplication benefits of the torque converter. "
Don't think there any many Subaru's with 553 lbs ft of torque! Using the figures above you would need 430 lbs ft of torque.

in the article it says the engines are removed, it also has some of the hydraulic components removed, because i went to Dunsfold to remove them!!!!!!
and it is the plane that was used in James Bond Casino Royale

Initial traction's the thing. The tugs used to pull 747's weigh 60 tonnes!
An Eng once told me that as long as the aircraft hasn't had time to settle ("square wheels") he could nudge it back it back by himself. A couple of seconds later and it's not possible. Strange but true (apparently)

At the wheel the driver pressed the accelerator around halfway down in second gear before easing off as the aircraft gained momentum. With no visible loss of traction the Touareg began dragging the 231 ft airframe of the 747 along the runway, maintaining an even five mph in the process.

Clutch is the main issue.
Being an auto makes a huge difference as this is one of the prime benefits of using torque converters. For this reason automatic gearboxes are superb for offroading and climbing steep inclines without breaking traction or bogging down (not so good for hill descending, but I usually only worry about that when there is something bigger/stronger than me in the way, like trees and unimogs )

Its an Ex british airways aircraft, and the engines still had hours left on them, so were removed, and dumnmy cowlings fitted, plus for the james bond film, they wanted to do some modifiactions to the body of the plane. as i said earlier i rmeoved some hydraulic items from the aircraft too.
