Default Pajero starting problems???

My father in law has a pajero on a n plate, 2.8 diesel.

Sometimes on startup it smokes like bet lynch and doesnt actually starts, it just smokes and bellows out a sort of bellowy sound and then other times it starts fine.

It runs fine when its going,

anyone got any ideas on what it might be,

He left it with a garage the other week and sods law, it started fine all week for the mechanic, so they couldnt tell what was wrong with it, but the day after he got it back, same problem,

cheers
Taffy

Lightbulb

have you tried the heater plugs, and on the pajero there is an ally strip across them that might need a good cleaning,
if ,when at the garage its inside , but left outside at your house ,it could explain why it would start ok at the garage, if 1 or 2 pugs have gone down it will smoke but not start, get some easy start and if it doesn't start one morning spray into the airbox, if it fires up , it the plugs
