Golf 115 PD performance degrading
My brother in law has a W reg Gold 115 PD and he says that it doesnt puyll like it used to, he is changing it anyway necxt year but I thought it was worth asking on here.
I seem to remember that the MAF ? sensor could be the problem when performance tails off.
Has anyone got any experience of this, are they cheap and easy to change ?
Its only done 30,000 miles but does mainly short journeys.

I would say it needs a really good long run , Diesel's don't like short journeys some good additive in the tank an a good run would clear its throat

If performance and economy is being affected, then it's probably the MAF.
You can try cleaning it with Halfrods Electrical Contact Cleaner. It will probably need a secuirty torq bit (or the five point one) to undo it though.

Yes mate i had a 110 golf tdi that was over time getting slower and slower.. then changed the maf and wow! was like a different car, cost was about £55 for a new one. Well worth a go i would of thought. You could try cleaning it but will not last long.

Worth a look on Fred's TDI Page. TDIClub.com. VW TDI Enthusiast Community. Not necessarily failing MAFs but contacts on the MAF connector may be the issue.
Try disconnecting it, cleaning it with eletrical contact cleaner and replugging it.

If what vindaloo says does NOT work, then the MAF will probably need changing. Curiously, a failing MAF does not always show up on diagnostics.
IIRC most VAG dealers do them on exchange for about £55 - 60 as said above.
There was some talk of using a Mercedes MAF (which used to be cheaper) but it really only works on the non-PD VAG diesels, and now there's not really any price benefit.

Almost certainly the MAF! I used the Merc MAF and it worked very well on my 115PD. The voltage / airflow chart is very close to the VW part, just a little higher in places. I didn't get any black smoke so all the fuel was obviously being burnt to good effect
