Default Diesel for £4 - £5K - any recommendations?

Currently running a Volv C70 T5 GT which is a 2.3 engine and whilst as smooth as ****, it's costing a lot in petrol! I do approx 350 miles a week and this is setting me back £50+. Perhaps time to consider a deisel!

I would like something that's fairly stress-free and confortable, also bearing in mind I have a 2yr old (but that doesn't restrict me to a saloon, I'm happy with a hatchback or coupe).

Any ideas???

Focus TDCI best there is for the money. Best handling and the most reliable. My sister ran a Focus TDCI 115 for 2 years and 40k miles, having bought it at one year old with 25k miles. Nothing broke, and it returned 50mpg day in, day out. Her's was a LX with the climate pack, so it had air-con & heated windscreen. Look for one of these, plenty about the £5k mark pre haggling.

You won't find a lot of diesels as smooth / comfy as the C70. New Mondeos are quite refined I suppose. Really you'd want to look at Mercs but they may be out of budget

TDCi Mondeo would be my choice.

I went down the same route last year.
