The rs4 wheels are to be avoided. Either cheap reps or soft originals. Either way the car wasn't designed for either and the ride/handling will be compromised.
Other than that not a bad choice although in many ways you may as well get a 4motion passat diesel if you can find one and save money.

I have an A4 1.9 TDi Avant Sport and it's a very good car. I wouldn't bother with the Quattro unless you really need 4WD as it blunts perofrmance and MPG. I have had mine chipped so it now produces circa 180Bhp and 240 lb/ft torque which is more than enough for normal family use. I still get on average 620miles to a tank of supermarket diesel which equates to approx. 45mpg average. Check the Service History to see if it's on LongLife service plan or not. The service interval will depend upon how car is driven/deterioration of oil etc. and on longlife I am seeing 16k miles between services! I am sure more wear and tear must take place following this plan but to be honest i've not had any problems. Big service, Cam belt etc. is at 60k miles.
I bought ours as the family wagon and it does that superbly. Our daughter sits safely in the back with ISOFIX fittings and we can sling the buggy, changing bag etc. in the back and still have room for the shopping. Aso meant that I didn't have to join the MPV club! <shudder>

You are right to shudder, cant compare our Sharan to a A4, cost pretty much the same but the A4 is much nicer to drive, father in law has a newish auto 2.5 diesel, nice but it doesnt feel any quicker than my mates 130 ?
