I like the idea of a company. Just one less thing for you not to worry about [servicing / maintenance / insurance] etc etc. I gave mine up for an extra few hundred a month - regret it now though

£20k also buys you a reasonable diesel saloon. Alfa 159 would be nice.

On balance it was worth it for me -- married with two kids I needed a family barge so had a Volvo T4 estate and then (when the new emissions-based taxation came in) got a Passat 130 diesel.

Tax is £1500 per year and zero running costs (I buy my own fuel & claim back business mileage).

Some would say they'd rather have the extra £4K per year but you've got to pay tax on THAT too.

There are lots of car tax calculators on the web so your mate can play with figures etc.

Those new Golfs with the hybrid super / turbocharging would make good sense as they have very low emissions for a 170bhp, reasonably quick petrol.

Edited to add that cars complying with EECIV regs are taxed lower

I used to get the same deal, 20k on any car or I would get £500 a month extra in my pay. The £500 worked out to about £300, which once you include servicing, insurance and wear and tear you would be left with about £150 a month to pay for a car. This is not a lot, and would see you in a base Foucs etc.

So I went down the company car route and got a Civic Type R. Cost quite a bit in tax £1500 ish IIRC. But other than that it was a free car, I would park it up anywhere not worrying about it getting scratched or dented etc - very nice to not worry about a car! Did a few track days too and company paid for 4 sets of new tyres

only worth it if you are doing the miles and if not you have to be a basic tax rate payer, forget it if you paying higher rate tax!!

I was in a company scheme for 8 years, great whilst I was in it but so happy I'm out!

Why is it the agency's fault?

Funny thing is half the company used to go to the track days as people mostly had hot hatches, clio 182, CTR etc - my boss included!

Its isnt unknown for them to exagerate, but fair point, might be the client p1ssing them about.

This thread is probably dead now the job has evaporated, but the other thing to consider is which car you want. If you want an STI then take the cash...if you want an average diesel family runabout then it is probably worth a punt. The tax figures are calculated to make it worthwhile to drive something with low CO2, but massively punishing otherwise.
