Company Car, worth it ?

A mate is thinbking of changing jobs and a company car has been mentioned but he doesnt/wont do many miles, he can choose pretty much anything up to 20 ish grand.

Tidgy 26 September 2006 12:41 PM

mate of mine is selling his sti10 for that ;) lol

I like the idea of a company. Just one less thing for you not to worry about [servicing / maintenance / insurance] etc etc. I gave mine up for an extra few hundred a month - regret it now though :(

£20k also buys you a reasonable diesel saloon. Alfa 159 would be nice.

On balance it was worth it for me -- married with two kids I needed a family barge so had a Volvo T4 estate and then (when the new emissions-based taxation came in) got a Passat 130 diesel.

Tax is £1500 per year and zero running costs (I buy my own fuel & claim back business mileage).

Some would say they'd rather have the extra £4K per year but you've got to pay tax on THAT too.

There are lots of car tax calculators on the web so your mate can play with figures etc.

Those new Golfs with the hybrid super / turbocharging would make good sense as they have very low emissions for a 170bhp, reasonably quick petrol.

Edited to add that cars complying with EECIV regs are taxed lower

I used to get the same deal, 20k on any car or I would get £500 a month extra in my pay. The £500 worked out to about £300, which once you include servicing, insurance and wear and tear you would be left with about £150 a month to pay for a car. This is not a lot, and would see you in a base Foucs etc.

So I went down the company car route and got a Civic Type R. Cost quite a bit in tax £1500 ish IIRC. But other than that it was a free car, I would park it up anywhere not worrying about it getting scratched or dented etc - very nice to not worry about a car! Did a few track days too :nono: and company paid for 4 sets of new tyres ;)

Er, boss, can I have a word.........

I have a little problem, heres a video of it on Myspace.

Varboy 27 September 2006 03:50 PM

only worth it if you are doing the miles and if not you have to be a basic tax rate payer, forget it if you paying higher rate tax!!

I was in a company scheme for 8 years, great whilst I was in it but so happy I'm out!

Not an issue anyway, the salary has gone down by 5k, so my 'mate' isnt going to bother, bloody agencies.

Why is it the agency's fault?

:lol1:

Funny thing is half the company used to go to the track days as people mostly had hot hatches, clio 182, CTR etc - my boss included! :lol1:

billythekid 28 September 2006 02:31 PM

Its isnt unknown for them to exagerate, but fair point, might be the client p1ssing them about.

Blueblaster 28 September 2006 08:00 PM

This thread is probably dead now the job has evaporated, but the other thing to consider is which car you want. If you want an STI then take the cash...if you want an average diesel family runabout then it is probably worth a punt. The tax figures are calculated to make it worthwhile to drive something with low CO2, but massively punishing otherwise.

J4CKO 28 September 2006 08:16 PM

Its gone back up by 2 grand but stll 3 less than I was expecting, 500 less thn I am on now but with a car but no call out allowance, not enought to be bothered moving for.

Jay_bee 28 September 2006 08:50 PM

It does sound like its the client thats messing. What is it you do?

J4CKO 28 September 2006 10:49 PM

Databases, wasnt really looking, just got an agency contact me and it sounded good so I asked a few questions, happy where I am but you know, if theres a chance to improve your situation its worth asking.

Bouyant market for IT bods at the mo.

Jay_bee 28 September 2006 10:51 PM
