E39 M5
Currently top of my list to replace the RS6.
Anyone owned one? Driven one?
Any comments? (no sarcy remarks about indicators please, I definitely don't fit 'that' stereotype )
Looking at one next weekend.

BTW regarding warranty, I've heard you can buy a BMW warranty even after it lapeses, so long as the car passes a BMW inspection, which apparently costs £150? Anyone know if that is correct?

BMW are generally really good about warranty/out of warranty items. When I worked for Wood BMW in Bournemouth and Salisbury a bloke had his e39 M5 towed in it was 2 years out of warranty but with only 19000 on the clock and a full BMW history.
Anyway the engine had lunched itself and the lump without ancillarys was £13k plus vat plus fitting. the long and short of it was as he had a full dealer history and it was farily obvious he had never tracked it they paid for the new engine all he had to pay for was fitting £2.5k!
This was probobly a one off case but it shows that sometimes dealers can be nice! And judging by the price of the engine £2K for an extended warranty sounds like a bargain!

yep cheap compared to the costs when things go wrong but 2K is one hell of an insurance policy to pay out every year and as I remember 'Edcase' is getting out of his RS6 to save money. An M5 isn't going to save you much really other than interest payments.

I think I'd pay it just to be able to use the car fully with impunity. I just don't think I'd take the risk without. Same goes for the RS6, I'd never own it without.
The thing with the RS6 I want to get rid of is the monthly repayments, whereas I could buy the M5 outright with cash. I'm not so bothered with 'running costs'. If I'm honest I'm also keen to have something a bit more 'exciting' to drive (i.e. 400bhp RWD )

Also BMw warranties , on M cars at least, now have an excess, wand are VERY pricey to start with, so m5 ownership remains a very expensive prospect...although a helluva lot of car for the cash...

With regard warranties, BMW raised the price substantially on 'M' cars earlier this year. There's a £250 excess per claim, and the annual cover is approx £1000 for cars up to 60k miles and approx £1800 for cars above that (and iirc reduced cover too).
So unless you're prepared to take a risk with an older high mileage M5 bought for sub £15k, I don't think this route will save you much money.
Gary.

Why not buy a Jag XJR if a luxo powerbarge is acceptable?
There's one on PH for 9k, 1998 and 65k. 370bhp rwd, not a lot heavier than the M5. Even if it falls apart immediately you lose £9k max, and that's not all that likely imo.
I'm not saying it's a match for an M5, but it costs half as much and the M5 aint twice as good. Cheap, comfy, fast and entertaining.
**** boot space though.

FYI.. 5.0 V8 in the E39 wasn't a M-designed engine (bored out version of the 4.0 from the 540i ?) so they have a habit of going pop when driven hard So make sure it's got a warranty on it if you do take the plunge.
So basically, E34 M5 is the last before current to have truly M-designed engine.
Think that's how the story goes...

The changes are extensive; the S62 has 8 individual electronic throttle bodies instead of the single cable throttle of the M62, it has a dry sump and a sophisticated VANOS system that the M62 doesn't have. It just so happens that the VANOS system is the main failure point on the S62 engine. The engine itself is very reliable other than that; the M62 engine rarely goes wrong other than ancilliaries such as the water pump failing at higher mileages (quite easy to replace).
The E34 was the last hand build model of car, that is true. The E39 M5 was basically a standard 5 series production model, but I believe the engine was still built by M.

I've just been told categorically by a dealer, £450 to extend warranty, £250 excess per claim. Seems too cheap??

Although on second thoughts I guess the excess is where they make it up, as the warranty used to be more expensive but never with any excess.
Well, I may have found myself a new car
Looking at both the M5 and 25k mile GTA wagon at the weekend...

I thought it was more expensive than this. I'd get them to fax something to you. Googled and found this:
///M Powered
Cars under 60k = £1050
Cars 60k - 100k = £1800
Cars over 100k = NOT covered
Excess of £250

Well, she checked specifically against the chassis number of the car in question.
