Car trouble...
Not mine, a friends. Its a Fiat Punto, I need advise please if its not too much trouble, to ease his mind at least
Right, My mate hit a curb quite hard with his rear wheel going round a bend. Now there`s a couple of large chunks taken out of the alloy, squeeking from that rear side on slow driving, and judder on breaking. The car has drums on the back as opposed to disks and calipers.
Anyone got any clues as to what damage might have been caused?

Wheel bearing quite likely plus he may have fubbard the rear bushes on the axle / beam.
If the has fubbard the rear wheel bearing / spiggot it should not be that costly but if he has knackered the bushes on the rear arm or worst still knackered the rear arm completely he will be looking at £££££££ in labour charges I would imagine.
The above are my best guesses based on what info you have given.

I did the same thing in a punto pool car I was given while my Mundano was in the garage. I entered bend at same speed as I would in the Mundano, found Punto's grip limits to be lower and understeered into the high kerb.
Damage to Punto rear wheel was as described and car needed new wheel bearing plus alloy. Note even when these were replaced it 'drove funny' so something else serious was probably broken as well.
The joys of company car ownership.

Thankyou for the replies. We found the alloy was rubbing on the suspension shock. Changed wheel to smaller space saver, now not rubbing, but wobbling. Im guessing its a wheel bearing and suspension arm.
It goes into a Fiat garage tomorrow, ill report back with the diagnosis

Ok............
The diagnosis........
Its bad............real bad............
Alloy wheel dead
Tyre dead
Bent shock
Bent sub frame
Wheel bearing shagged
Tailgate and rear quater knocked out of alignment
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If it goes through the insurance its a possible write-off!!!!!
This is an 04 Fiat Punto Active sport 1.2 8v, which has only 6.5k on the clock and hit its rear wheel on a curb at 30mph MAX!!!
Truly shocking!!!!!!

Do the work yourselves, 1 day is all thats needed to get the rear suspension off and replaced.
May cost him about £400-500 to do with all parts etc.
I can't really see how the rear quarter would be knocked out of alignment, but then it is a Fiat.

You can actually see where the wheel has hit the rear quarter in the arch, pushed everything up, and the rear quarter has marked where it banged on the tailgate, pushing that over too
Insurance is a no-no now, he wont be able to afford to get cover next year if he does.

As modern cars are designed to de-form in the event of an accident there is commonly more damage than we used to expect in low speed incidents, as such just replacing the worst parts may not solve all driving probs. If you go down this route please have it checked by qualified engineer before you allow a 17 year old back on the road with it. It will cost a little but well worth it for peace of mind alone.
