Aircon behaviour in hot temps?
Hi,
Tried posting this on the VW golf forum but I'm left with a field for of dead horses.
The query regards a new Golf GT TDi with the standard climatic system (common to all VW's I believe).
I've found when outside temps are about 20 degrees the temp control seems to blow the same level of coolness of air despite being set at 18 or 22. Once past the 22 mark it noticably warms up.
However, in cooler temperatures (like first thing in the morning) the control seems to operate as expected.
Is this normal? or does my car need some dealer assistance?

My Passat with Climatronic is pretty much the same, there's not much difference if you've got the climate set between 18 and 22. If it's on "Lo" it should blow an arctic gale, however.
It's because the outside temp is high, which means it takes longer for the inside temp to reach the "target" of, say, 20 degrees. After 15 minutes or so, you'll probably find it settles down.

Its perfectly normal. Climatic isn't complicated, set the temperature you want in the car, and leave it to get on with it. Its not brilliant but it does its job pretty well. I've not changed the dial on mine for the last 4 months. I'll soon change it though for the winter months, I usually set it to 21C and let it get on with it.
To answer this, without the aircon switched on, which you do manually, then if the outside ambient temp is 20C, turning the dial to 18C or lower will not have any effect, as all the system can do is supply ambient temp air. If its warm and you want cold air, turn on the air-con.
Just a quickie, you do realise that the temperature dial is just that, you set the cabin temp you want and the climate control does the rest.

try opening the windows and driving after its been parked in the sun to let the hot air out.
if possible let the ac cool the interior down in a shaded place with the windows closed.
generally the system will not be able to cool aswell in hotter conditions as it does in cooler weather,as mentioned above.
may still be an idea to get the system topped up or refreshed, eventhough the summer is nearly over,it will be just as usefull in the damp rainy weather to keep the inside of the screen and glasses clear 9use ac with the temp high).
