8-10k to spend, any suggestions??
Hi, having been using my run around fiesta diesel now for about a year for work I am using the scoob less and less. As much as I still love it I am thinking of selling both and getting one car. Still after something with a bit of go but something which is still economical as I do about 300 miles a week so was considering a diesel, maybe a gold, audi or saab.
Any thoughts or suggestions??

If you can hack the image and the drawbacks what about a Clio 172 Cup or for a more mature car a Civic Type-R. The clio will get 35mpg and more and is quick and good to chuck about. The Civic is similar but with poorer mpg with the flipside of a better build and much better reliability. This is a common move for people hacked off with scooby running costs when used as a daily driver

Just buy a decent petrol car and fit LPG.
S2000, or something much more useable and cheaper to run?
MG ZS 180 for £4k, low mileage excellent chasis, and engine. Good looks in some eyes.

S2000 is a lot cheaper to run and a lovely car but you'd need to extend your budget a little to get a nicer example unless you want to dangle right at the bottom end. I used mines every day for 30,000 miles last year and loved it - it's been resigned to 2nd car now though

If you want a high power diesel then your only real choice at that money is a 330D/530D and tuning box. They are known to blow turbos though.
Should be possible to find a 5 that's had a new turbo though- I'd go for a 5 over a 3 anyday, quite simply a much better car and more fun than you'd think.

3 coupes are pretty pointless though. Heavier than a saloon and loads of wind noise from the pillarless doors. They don't even drive much better IMO, the only thing they have going for them is they look better than a 3 saloon and have through load as standard. Plus a 3 coupe with diesel engine is not even in this equation due to price.
A 5 is just a much better car, build quality, drive, everything.

I do pretty much 300 miles a week in a Saab 9-3, no handler but goes well, lovely elastic power delivery and its doing 34 mpg on my motorway run which is pretty good for a heavish petrol turbo car. Saabs I have to say arent a car with an initial wow factor, they are growers that you appreciate more as time goes on.

He wanted something fairly economical. Try reading the thread.

Haven't noticed any wind noise problems though.

Golf gt tdi is the way to go. I've had two, best mile munchers around. Big enough for most needs yet small enough to return a nice mpg. Classless look that's not going to date anytime soon.
I prefer the 130 gt tdi over the 150 as the 150 carries a premium price for not much more go, plus there are issues with the 150 that do not affect the 130.
Only gripe is the handling is a bit boaty in 'twisties'.
Expect to pay around £6k for a decent 130, bank the rest.

Back to the subject in hand the diesel VOLVO with RICA or tuning box is nippy but not much fun. Golf TDI is NOT fun either. Highly thermally effecient engines with a bit of go but one of the worst chassis I've ever driven. Kind of reminds me of a MK1 Vectra in a way. Plus a 150 has stacks more go anyone who tells you different bought a 130.

Back on topic another car worth considering as well as the Clio 182 mentioned at the top of the thread is a Focus diesel and tuning box. You should be able to get a 2.0TDCI for your money. Miles better drive than a golf MKIV and nippy to boot.

It is amusing! E.g. "I want a cheapish, economical, practical car to replace my Scooby. What would you suggest?"
>> "I hear Thrust SSC is now on the market for £1.8million. Does 0.00001 miles to the gallon, and seats one. Failing that, how about a more powerful Scooby?"*
* made up for comical purposes.
