Default £10k drivers cars everyone *must* own

Well, I'm planning on chopping in the RS6 for an Alfa 156 GTA but I've been getting a real itch lately to try out some cars I've missed over the years.

Given the rarity of the GTA in the UK, I expect it may take a while to find my exact requirements, so in the meantime I intend to scratch my itch with impunity, and £10-15k cash.

So...'real world' affordable drivers cars then, that everyone should try at least once, and that shouldn't lose too much money each time you sell it on after a month or two.

Here are the ones currently on my list, lets hear yours:

1. Integra Type R DC2
2. Clio Trophy
3. Porsche 964 Clubsport
4. BMW E30 M3
5. Elise
6. Some kind of caterfield
7. Z3M roadster
8. TVR Griffith 500 (maybe...)
9. Evo 6 Tommi Makinen
10. 306 Rallye???

that car is for sale, for a pretty hefty figure too at that. Real classic though.

Oh yes.

A list of drivers' cars ought to have a Lotus in it I reckon. For the money, either an original Elan or an 80s Esprit.

The Elan deserves to be on the list.

Never really thought of Lotus! The old wedge '88 shape HC Turbo would be nice although Im sure servicing would cost me a bomb.

A mate had a Lotus Excel SE and it only had 30k on the clock when he bought it and by the time it had got to 35k it had cost him 5 grand in servicing.....dont know the full details I was only 20 ish and he was a rich kid.

Well, not the most reliable cars in the world they do say. Not all that much to go wrong on an old Elan though, and little or no depreciation. Not very fast by modern standards, but then neither's a 106/205/306 and they're still great fun.

After my four last Imprezas I had a hankering for some vehicles I'd always wanted to own.

First was a big white van! Don't ask me why but I always fancied owning one so got a Scudo JTD for several months.

Chopped that in for a 205 gti 1.9 and did a mi16 with twin webers. Felt a gipo driving about in it, although it was fun, so changed that for a pristine Lotus Elise T reg, fantastic car.

Back to Imprezas for now, but next spring I might be tempted to getting another Lotus, this time a S1 111 (don't like the new shapes).

I want an escort cosworth and a 3 door sierra at some point. A 993 turbo would be nice too, and maybe a noble. I will get all of these cars at some point! But slightly out of the 10k budget!

Surely you won't get a decent M5 for that money, and frankly, if you're selling one barge, to eventually buy another barge, why not get something light and nimble for now?

Wouldn't of thought you'd get a particularly good Elise for that money either, although to be fair, I haven't looked.

I'd be very tempted with the 968 clubsport myself, although I'd have the Teg no question (dc2 or 5)

Or a megabusa

http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?...239&q=megabusa

That's a mentalist car

Just seen the clip. Those were the days when rallying was worth watching and the cars were 'similar' to the on the road versions. I don't follow rallying anymore as it's moved on so far from ordinary road versions it's unreal. At least with homologation you had some sort of chance owning something resembling to what was being rallied.

I got my mint Elise for 8,500 and sold it for 9k. Was a late model, with all the extras and in the best colour blue. They are out there.

They did a 911 clubsport, but they were the 3.2.

They also did a 964 RS clubsport, which was basically a road legal race car, and cost around 35k for a LHD version.

Buy right you may even make a few quid, buy wrong and you will lose a fair packet, I am sure that the Audi is wonderful but I reckon most of that lot will actually be more of a drivers car, less capable but more fun and with the added bonus that they will try to spit you into a hedge if you try and drive it like the Audi !
