Default Escort Cosworth

Sure its been covered a billion times but as no doubt there are many late twenties guys in the same boat now prices are reasonable.
I lusted over these for years and now the pull is getting too strong. whats the consensus then. Try and be fair although on this forum no doubt it will descend into a my dads bigger than yours debate. cmon guys seconds out......

Nearly everyone agrees the Scoobs and Evos will run rings round them on twsitie roads, the Cos needs to be tuned well to beat them, but I wouldn't worry about that.

Most people agree, an Escort Cosworth still looks the business, better than Scoob and Evo even though they are much older, and now becoming a rare site, I still love em, and stage one (270bhp) and stage 2 mods (330bhp) arn't that expensive.

u cant beat the looks of them - http://img406.imageshack.us/img406/9328/cos1033cu7.jpg

but if you are used to scoobs/jap cars you will (imo) hate the 'drive' of it - it is still a ford - gearbox like a tractor...! but some people love the drive of them and hate the drive of jap cars so it all boils down to personal taste - always brings a smile when i see one on the roads (not very often mind!)

Raf.

they look awsome from the outside, just the shabby interior really lets them down, but as its been said, they are getting on a bit now.

i just cant believe the prices that some people ask for them, some are above the 18K mark which IMO, is ridiculous

They look p*sh from every bloody angle. Total case of Rose tinted specs IMHO. I'm sorry but if you offer me a MR340 and a cossa it's a total no-brainer - the EVO is the better car in every way IMHO. Likewise Spec-C.

yes, but back in 94, you could not get an MR340 or a spec C, compare it with like for like at least FFS

im not a ford fan at all, i would still probably have taken the scoob, being a WRX STI, but then you still cant really compare them, as the imports were not as easily had as they are these days.

Do you find yourself pointing too without realising

Are you in your late 20's early 30's, most sufferers of these symtoms are in this age group.

I have seen very low miles "as new" Cossies sell for £28 - £30k this year.
In the next 10 years I would expect this to cross 35 - 40k mark.
GGR sold his personal car last year for £28 grand..

I grew up in the cossie era and although I know that almost every performance car made today is better I would still have to have one in my collection if my numbers came up. Its the car that sums up the 1990s IMHO.

Standard they look a bit dated now - i remember a limited edition in mallard Green with Rondell wheels and they looked awesome, better than any scoob (yes i do own a Scoob)

Still being an old fart now i still prefer the original bat mobile Sierra Cosworth in Moonstone Grey or Jet Black

I'm a big fan and might be considered a wipper snapper (22). As said, they always get the attention and are a true icon .

However, I have a feeling that it'll be a case of never meeting your childhood hero, you'll only be left disappointed..................but if anyone has one and fancies letting me have a go, i'm more than willing to risk the potential letdown .

i always wanted one from being a teenager, it does as someone said looks brutal.

it was the first proper performance car i ever sat my bum in (brother had xr2/3s) and that experiance will live with me for the rest of my life (cos the guy booted it )

but ive been in a couple now and the lower spec escort cosworths have a really poor interior plus the fact i wouldnt pay from anywhere near £14k+ for an 10 year+ old car

I was always a fan of the cossie when I was at school, I always wanted one, earlier this year a local garage had one in, so after a quick insurance quote I thought hmmm, maybe now is the time so had a test drive. To be fair it was the small turbo model, but I was wholey disappointed, nowhere near as good as I'd imagined, wish I'd just left it as a boyhood dream really. Maybe the big turbo model would be better.

Are the power figures massively different for the larger/smaller turbo models?

LOL so now we have to compare year of manufacture like for like

So if the engine capacity is different its not fair, if the breathing method of the engine is different its not fair, if the platform (fwd, rwd, 4wd) is different its not fair, if the year of design and manufacture is different its not fair, if the price when new isn't within 10% of each other its not fair, if the broad size and weight are different its not fair, if the specification is significantly different it's not fair??

So with the exception of cars that are near identical (saxo vts/pug 106 gti) what exactly can we compare?

The cossie is ****e. No doubt it was excellent in its time and can still hold its own (performance wise) now but the world has moved on sadly the cossie hasn't. It's value is held be predominantly middle-aged blokes that used to have wet dreams over them when they were too young to afford one. I personally see it as the ultimate chav status car - waaaay more so than a scooby! Each to their own Remember at the end of the day it's just an escort Sure the same can be said about the scooby and the Evo and many would argue that is half their problem

The day an Escos is ****e by anyones standards is a sad day for tuned motors.

With a bit of tuning the escos is still extremely capable and seriously rapid in its own right, admittedly not loaded with all the Evo and scoob extra's that have come with engineering advances but still a fantastic car. I wouldn't personally own the small turbo model since as said it is pretty dissapointing but to be fair it was designed to be a lag-less comfortable car, and to a degree not as harsh as the T34 model.

I'm an absolute ford nut but in my heart of hearts i'd own an Evo MR340 or the like over an escos these days unless the escort was extensively tuned, but for presence and the way a car makes you feel nothing can touch an Escort Cosworth.

Tuned to run say a T4, greys, Rs500 FMIC, BD10's with AVO's, AP's and a Zoo rear beam any jap boy better watch himself

i was actually thinking of getting one as it was my all time favourite car..i went to the garage in my own car(sti 6),looked at the escort and thought its just so much better looking than my own..it was a 94 imperial blue lux..apparently stage 1..i couldnt wait to drive it..so off i went.oh my god it felt so dated.that gearbox is just a joke.im sure youd get used to it but i was so used to my own being so close together.then i said ok il see if shes quick.put the foot down and all there was was noise and little preformance..just loads of lag and not much bang afterwards..i was gutted.im sure you buy one with loads of mods obviously it can be made v qiuck like any car..so basically i told the guy in the garage id have a think about it and all.hopped back in my own car and took off and thought to myself wtf was i thinking..imo they have had their day,il always drool when i see one but no way id ever want to own one..also it would be a nightmare with all the ramps around my way with that front splitter

il never tire of the looks though...

What a tosser, this coming from a man, who owns or did own a saxo, and dares to call a escort cosworth ****e.
I'd fancy the VTS to run rings round the cossie in the twisties. I owned a scooby which is far better than a p.o.s. ford and there is truely no comparison between my S2000 and a cossie. One trick pony as far as I'm concerned. "Haw-way man, I've just spunked £x,grand an a Stage 3.25 fur m' cossa, minted man! It now goes from 0-100mph in 8.5 seconds!"

Great 2003, 25k miles EVO7 FQ300 for circa £12k. £2k later, 400bhp. Handles better, looks, better, is more reliable, is as fast in a straight line, is faster in ever other regard, has a better image, is probably less on insurance, is 10 years younger, etc, etc.

They were once the ultimate uk tuning car but that was largely because they had a massive market head-start on the Scooby and Evo but guess what, the scooby and evo have been out for ages and they have totally erroded that only advantage the cossa had. When I had my MY99 400bhp was almost unheard of with only a handful of owners having cars with that kind of power. 400bhp scoobys are almost common place and most evo's run that with a remap, fuel pump and decat!

Some of you lot need to learn to let go. Search my posts and you'll find countless posts from yester-year defending the VTS as one of the best hot-hatches. It was an excellent car in its time and it still performs well but things have moved on and I can accept that. The Clio Trophy would p*ss all over a VTS in every single measure - that's just progress. The VTS did what is should and rolled over and died and its value did exactly that as well. The cossa should have done the same IMHO. You could offer me a mint late cossa with 300bhp for £7k and I'd turn you down. I'd rather shop around for an STI-5.

Great car in its day but the newest car will be 11 or so years old by now. Most will have been thrashed and lots will have been crashed. Mine has had 9 owners since I sold it in 1997.....There's quite a difference in the tuning potential of the small newer and older larger turbo.I had a stage 1 upgrade to 270bhp but reliability suffered...exhaust camshaft snapped

340bhp comes for around £700 which will get you to 60 in around 4.7 second mate.

I love scoobs, but have to agree on the rare occasion I see an Escort Cosworth, down goes the bottom jaw. They still look fantastic even now.

(and yep, I'm in me early 30's !!!)

Worth noting the following.

The power output required was dicated by Ford who were adamant they did not want more than 220bhp due to fears about warranty claims.
Famous conversation went like this..

Cosworth: Are you sure you only want 220bhp as we are having detuning it to that extent

Ford: Yes, we dont want any more than 220bhp.

This is the reason why you can spend about £500 to upgrade to 330bhp and the car flies along as it is mor elike it was intended. In standard form they are disappointing because of the above.

I have had the priviledge to own 3 Sierra Cosworths and a Escort Cosworth and they are great cars, very reliable and easy to make go fast.

"Saxo Boy" your name says it all. Likewise if you REALLY think a Saxo could beat a Escort Cosworth on the twisties or any road for that matter, then I suggest you give up the drugs
