3.0v6 Jag X types
Im just weighing up the option of buying a 3 year old Xtype 3.0v6 sport edition.
They're selling for around 12k with 30,000 miles on and the package includes full leather, cruise control, sat nav, tele etc...
Do the good people on here know much about servicing costs / reliability etc...
Any advice welcome as always
Thanks

Fancy Mondeo mate with four wheel drive. About 6.5 to 60, but slow to 100. Now if they did a type "R" like they said they would.....that would bo of interest!

I'm looking to get one too I spoke to a jag dealer and he told me reliability is good, and in fact the whole car was very good, I did drive a 2.5. the other week and didn't like it but the 3.0. is a lot quicker!!!
Cheers

My brother had one for a year when they first came out, nice to drive, similar economy to an Impreza and the only fault that I can remember was a problem with the central locking.
If it's out of guarantee I would try to find a decent independant for servicing.
Have you tried a Mondeo ST 220? You should get a lot newer car for the money and save quite a bit on fuel with it being 2 wheel drive.

When looking for one, check the last 5 digits of it chassis number (N/S of the screen) If it starts with a C then leave well alone D or E and you will be ok.
Small niggles like the central locking playing up and some had problems with boot release also.
Engine is pretty strong look out for noisey shocks, and clunking drive shafts, and diffs.
A Manual 3.0 will feel quick

bargain cars but watch for heavy depreciation (not like a 30k car can loose much more than 18k over 3 years ) but otherwise its a ford mondeo in a different shell.

Definitely not a re-shelled Mondeo!
Built by Jag from the ground up on a Mondeo chassis package space AFAIK - It took them so much more design work to fit the Jag requirements in the package space it would have been cheaper at the end of the day to have ignored the Mondeo constraints.
The company I worked for then designed the exhaust systems... You can only imagine the fuel consumption for durability tests 3.0l engines running at max power for a week at a time
Nice motors... esp 3.0 - it is NOT a reshelled MONDEO!!!!!!!! Aaaarghhhh
So there!

You may as well complain because the cig lighter in a Polo is the same as a Passat - or the heater matrix is the same. Cross platform sharing goes a variety of the ways but this common misconception blown out of proportion gets people a lot of the time.
So your chums who worked on it are right but wrong in the overall scheme of things. We work closely with Ford and Jag, and hence have a pretty decent steer.
Component sharing is rife in the industry - Jag were just silly enough to say it...

I use to work for Jaguar, some people use to think it would be clever to say its just a rebadge Mondeo, The look on there face when I would agree ...... and then point to there Audi A4 and tell them that it was a rebadged Skoda Octavia .......

Nice one chaps - I am edging closer to this earth shattering decision It sounds promising so far, rebadged mondeo or not...

Have a good test drive if you can, I've done about 1000 miles in a 3litre auto and ...... I didn't like it. My impressions were vague handling, crashy ride and as quick as I would expect for 200+ bhp.
Also the autobox is ALWAYS in the wrong gear, in either sport or normal mode!

A guy in work bought one of these recently on a 52 plate, manual.
He paid 9k for it, and is pleased as punch with it. Had a spin in it and feels nice, quicker than i was expecting too

Surely A3=Golf and Octavia= passat and A4.
My golf was damn near identical to my mates A3
They are all the same anyway. A3, A4, A6, golf, bora, passat, octavia. Same switch gear, same engines etc. Presume Seats are the same but never driven one.

Passat is same platform as A4 I think. Skoda Superb is a stretched version.

I don't get why it would be a problem to be based on a Mondeo though?
Aren't they usually given the awards for best handling cars in their class? Or is it just cool to bash Fords?

Sub97 - I agree... The Mondeo is a VERY good car all the way from the family runabout 1.8 LX to the executive 3.0l ST220... Nothing wrong with using that platform as a basis for a Jag...
The facts of the matter are that Jaguars own design department engineered the X-type within certain constraints imposed by Ford -the 'Mondeo platform'.
I think the problem occurs with people saying it's just a rebadged Mondeo or reshelled Mondeo trying to imply that people who have spent the extra money for a Jag have just been fobbed off with a bit of styling and nothing substantial improved under the skin.
A bit like comparing a 1.6/8 basic Impreza against a 2.5 litre STi - these even are 'the same car' - but there is not much that is actually identical.
Or a base model diesel series 1 Land Rover Discovery against a Discovery3 V8 HSE - OK perhaps that's a bit too far...
When GM bought a share in Subaru - I used to get people at work (in the auto industry) telling me my Impreza was 'just an awd astra'
Funny old world...

I've driven a few. My rating: meh!
It's nice to waft around in and it handles well. But its feel lardy and sloppy when pushed, in fact it somehow manages to feel lardy as it's bigger heavier siblings, which is odd, seeing it is lighter and theorectically better balanced. Shame as it feels like this sloppyness has been "engineered" in. By that I mean the long and soft brake pedal travel which all modern jags have (old BL era jags never did, so why do they do it now? It's horrible ), and the steering follows suit is lack of directness. Maybe the sport model adresses all this, but then, so would an ST220 for less
Engine is nice and perky works well with the manual box, but it does feel quicker than it actually is, and you notice this when you wind it up in 3rd or 4th. Never had the (dis)pleasure of an auto, so can't comment on them.
To sum up. Prefer to drive the BMW 330SE (not sport - too jiggly), not as nice to sit in or waft about with though. Scrub that...prefer the 530, but that's in a different class altogether
