Question £5k car that is reliable enough for long jouneys, yet will double as a track car.

Anyone have any thoughts or is a better option to get £3k worth of Mondeo/Vectra and £2k of Mk2 Golf c/w track bits?

Go for one car that does both but get 2 sets of wheels. The running costs of 2 cars mean you'll really only have 4k to play with.

Running costs are not included in the £5k - that is purchase only.

IntegraR, but I thought they were a bit noisy on long journeys because of the short gearing?

Accord Type R

Or a Focus 2.0 - cheap, handle brilliantly, easy to strip out if required.

Mondeo/vectra as a track car

Get something like a 306 gti, or even better, a 205gti 1.9 or a mi16 conversion. Cost about 2k whichever car you choose.

The 306 for long journeys though

The Mundano would be the road car.

There doesnt appear to be many Accords on the Trader website. Anyone know a forum for them?

Ah right, 205 gti then, no question. Mondeo estate and a trailer and you're there. Forget tax and MOTs if you can trailer the track car about.

It very much depends how many track days you are looking to do and what you need to use the car for on the road. If its your daily commuter car then dont double it up as a track car .......The reason is simple, you WILL have issues on track days rendering the car un-driveable. It may be as simple as knackerd discs and you havent got time to fit your spares or it may be more terminal.......
If the road car is just a run around then by all means double it as a track car .........

My suggestions for £5K would be
Early 172 (£4.5K)
306GTi6 (£3K)
E36 M3 (£4-4.5K)
MX5

It would be occasional track use, 4 or 5 days a year but a lot of road miles.

Saying all this, it'll probably be easier to keep the Clio, it just depends on whether or not I need to free up some money by selling the car.

I wouldn't double a high mileage road car as a track car ........

If I did it would be a new (ish) car costing £10K or more.

Another vote for the mr2 turbo. (if you can cope with two seats!)
