Impreza name gets cheapened further.
"In an effort to move the Impreza to appeal more to family types, Subaru is taking its Impreza and turning it into a 'daring' hatchback. Or at least UK pub Auto Express says so, which doesn't completely rule out a sedan model for the U.S. market. Of course, with the sudden bumper crop of foreign-badged three-and-five doors available in North America (Volkswagen GTI, Audi A3, MINI Cooper, the soon-to-be Volvo S40, etc.), we wouldn't count on it. According to AE, the next Impreza is expected to debut at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, with lower-rung Imprezas looking to convert buyers of the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf/Rabbit (which we thought was the M.O. all along, no?).
For diehard Subie fans, rest assured that the automaker still plans on an STi putting out over 300 horsepower to balance the enthusiast's books."

to me tho, this is not an impreza. Its a different car altogether. Imprezas are either salons or estates not some focus rivaling hatch back.

It's not, and never will be an Impreza. It's a Photoshop mock-up created solely to sell magazines, along the same lines as the Daily Sport makes up stories about buses on the moon. They seem to have a "New Impreza" on every 7th issue

I used to work for the publishers of Aexpress and on the whole the mag isn't too bad. However, it was embarassing at times as it did seem like PhotoshopWeekly at times 
What else do you do when there's not many news stories about though? Gotta fill up pages with something.

At least it hasn't got oversized wheels, graphics, dustbin exhausts. Far from cheapening the name, its real step up from most Imprezas I see these days

So what if subaru wants to compete with the likes of ford, vw, vauxhall?? Thats how business's stay in business!
I love it how so many people think that the impreza is some how like a ferrari in terms of image.
They produce a quick car for 20-25K, thats it!

They already have , the new focus st is volvo powered .
the main reason subaru are changing to a hatch the saloons are too heavy
and cumbersome for the wrc , as the new car hasnt set any stages alight
this year .
