I've got an S4 Avant (2.7 Bi-turbo Quattro) - what age were you looking at? The newer one?
I can comment on mine, but not really worth it if you're looking at a newer one etc....

Tactful as ever eh, Audilover!! "Nothing special"!!!
It might be to him
Size-wise, pretty similar to the Scoob, but less leg room in the back. Bigger boot space (I had an MY95 wagon). Quattro felt so sure-footed - very similar to Subaru's AWD. Very comfy inside and feels very well built.
Obviously the S4 is much more potent than the Scooby (more like an STI), but if that's anything to go by, the 2.8 won't exactly be a slouch
MPG - well mine can be shocking but 9/10 times, I'm getting pretty much the same as the Scoob did.
HTH.
PM if you need any further info (if I can help!)

A friend's had an A6 2.8 quattro (P plate) for 6 years, it's just given up after 18 months of expensive problems - brakes, suspension and a gearbox bearing.
It was serviced by a specialist for this period and didn't cost the Earth, but fuel consumption was low to mid 20s. It was a comfortable motorway cruiser, with good balance on large A roads, space in the back wasn't good due to the components for the electric seats.
In summary, a good car, but running costs can be high.

The only problem with the B5 A4's are the seats. There just too hard, or at least my old man's was when he had a S4. After a couple of hours, your back starts to really ache. His were full leather, so half leather or cloth seats might be softer.
Inside is usual Audi quality. i.e. The best around. Try for a Bose sound system, as they really make a difference.

They are extremely well built cars however, my old man has got a '97 A4 which hes had forever (sees no reason to change) and with over 150k it still runs great - hasnt even needed a new clutch.
