I had one for 3 years and it was great .....

It did, however, let me down a couple of times - overheating where the fans never cut in. This was happened on the last (!) day of the manufacturer's warranty. It needed a new fan - which would have cost me over £500. Apparently it was a known fault fixed on later versions (mine was a 2000 'W' reg.

Other than the fan problem it was faultless, no rattles, squeaks or infact anything. It loosened up quite noticeably but not until 17-18K.

The engine is sweet and very quick revving but let down by the ridiculously soft suspension. Very comfortable but most definitely not 'hot hatch' very much tourer.

The clutch is very sharp in it's take up making smooth pull aways in 1st or 2nd very, very difficult but you get used to it. The gearbox is very direct but OK.

Overall I was impressed by the car - it just wasn't quite quick enough. This combined with the soft suspension made me get rid of it ..... but, as I say, it kept me amused for 3 years which, as I get bored with cars very quickly says something about it as a complete package.

To quickly sum up, if you want to spend £££££££££££'s on petrol when not going very quickly (like a WRX) then they're *ok*.... otherwise NO !!

in two years the following happened:

new drivers seat
new fans (as above, mine was an 02 car so no they were never fixed on the later models)
2x headlight washer units
1 x control arm
2x coil packs
rear boot lock
window regulator
plus lots of little things that i can't be bothered to mention. it left me stranded 3 times in 3 years and went back to the dealers 12 times in 2 years for repairs (not including servicing). Unfortunately after speaking to other owners my experience was fairly typical too. I chopped it in and got the scoob as I was so fed up it and the scoob was faultless.

As far as petrol is concerned, was about the same as the scoob as was insurance etc but servicing should be a little cheaper. As a cruiser I think it was a great car although the damping falls apart on a typical B road. Not a bad car apart from the realiability issues and if you find a good one (they are out there) then Its a good car with a silky engine and quality interior.

It's a v6 that drinks as much fuel as a Scoob but only kicks out 208bhp.

No brainer really !

How much does a UK* MY93-98 Scoob 'kick out' mate...

IIRC, the Golf develops 204bhp.

Cheers,
Grant

*UK Scoob is Grp 17 insurance, which is the same as the Golf IIRC.

True, true... Guess it all depends on what sort of drive you are after.

I ran a Y-plate 4Motion for just over a year and would definately agree with the cruiser comments, not a a/b road specialist car this, for me anyway. Motorway was ok and sweeping twists not bad but imperfections in the road and a bit of speed did not really gel with this car. I actually found it to be quite economical for something that does have a bit of poke with it, I mainly did motorway work but rush hour so lots of stop start action and would regularly see 30 MPG, sure it went down on spirited runs but certainly not so much as my MY02 PPP WRX did... better fuel economy than that and I wasn't so bother about Optimax going in the Golf either.

Reliability was fine on mine in 20000 miles, just a water pump weeping that was swapped under warranty.

Give it a set of springs/shocks and a remap and it would be a pretty reasonable motor - a bit characeterless without...

I had a remap on mine from AmD .... started as 202bhp ended as 222bhp. Torque was way over standard ..... which was good. It was never going to perform like a chipped turbo but made the car much keener everywhere - particularly between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm whereas before it was a bit flat at this area of the rev range.

Trouble was it stilll wasn't quick enough to keep me interested!

My Dad has an 03 V6 4 Motion and had a GTi 1.8T before that, on both cars the fuel pump filter failed. A common fault im told. The air con on the 1.8T also failed. The climate on the V6 has played up a couple of times, but seems to be working ok now.

The car itself is very smooth in the way it delivers its power and to be honest 0-60 in mid to high 6s, a mid 15 quarter mile and a 146mph top speed isnt that bad when you consider the weight of the car!

My only complaint about the car is the lack of pedal response from the accellertor.
