Golf 1.8T
Right so ill admit i know next to nowt about the golf, as ive been lookin at the LCR and the Octavia vRS but they are a little too pricey at the moment as id like to move out within 12month so thinkin about 8k absolute max.
Whats the difference between the engines apart from the 75BHP
Been leaning towards the golf more than the older Cupra due to the golfs having lower miles and their being more choice with them.
Open to sugestions though

Oddly enought the 2.2 Astra SRi is a hoot! And should be a great second hand buy!

Mate get a 2002 audi A3 1.8T sport instead they come with 155bhp and chipable to around 200hp but then so is the golf.
How about a 2002 Toyota celica 190bhp instead for your money?

I thought the golf GTI had like 130hp and then upgraded to 180. Mistaken yet again.

Mk I octavia vRS's are cheaper than Golf GTI's.Nature of the beast. Also,no one wants to steal a skoda
Standard 180bhp as opposed to golf gti's 150 (Anniversary had 180)
People do a lot of fiddling with their octavias.I love mine (swapped from an Audi A4 with a 1.8T which had 163 bhp)

For £8K you could look at the Golf V6 4Motion... 204BHP 2.8V6 and 4 wheel drive...
I've got one.... totally debadged and it is a lovely car to drive (ESP takes all the guess work out of launches!)

I have a 1.8T Golf and it is certainly soulless Mine is just used as a daily work hack though so does the job fine. Get around 33mpg doing an 11 mile commute each way through mainly 40mph zones (although some 30s and 60s).
I agree with Ns04, it should have been at most a GT and not a GTi (in the true spirit of things). As a car goes, it's fine, but it is heavyweight so don't expect a sprightly little number.
Another alternative is the limited run that they did of the Skoda Octavia 4x4 Saloon. Think they only did them in saloon shape for a year or so. It also has the 150bhp engine, and with some suspension mods and tuning mods can be quite a lethal weapon

I could only find 2001-2002 models in saloon version, hence why I thought it was a limited run. Obviously people are hanging on to them then
Would have had one if I could have found one that didn't have stellar miles on it At least it shows they last!

Don't bother with any golf of that generation if you want to have a laugh, the 4motion is still a soulless fat git and the 4wd isn't in the same class as the scooby or Evo. The V5 golf was the only one which approached having any potential...at least it had an interesting engine that sounded ok.

The Golfs interior is in a totally different league to the octavia
all this talk about other vag ko3'd 1.8t's being some how superior is complete crap
Golf does need some essential tweaks but if your getting one at the right price that shouldn't be a problem, absolute must is a remap upgraded springs dampers and one of the best things i ever did to the chassis a nuespeed rear anti roll bar
the Golf is now a 1.9 with a 350+ bhp and copes surprisely well with a few extra tweaks to the chassis on top of the above
happy to answer any other questions about the 4x4 octavia vs the golf
cheers
