My new shopping car!

My new shopping car!
My last shopping car has just about died (mondeo LX) so I have been looking for an ugrade so that I can continue to visit supermarkets and shopping centres with out fear of having my real cars or vans damaged.
I mentioned it to my 86 year old neighbour and he said I could have his car if I wanted for £200, so I handed over the money and am now the owner of a VW polo 1.3 Formel C
First registered 1985 with 1 owner from new, only used for 6 months of the year (he lives in Florida the other half), not one spot of rust, seats have had covers on since new and everything else seems to be in immaculate condition (he cleaned it everyday). Has some sort of automatic engine stoping and starting system for when you are sitting in traffic but cant figure out how to work it, not bad for a 21 year old car!
One small problem the brakes dont seem to stop the car very well, are polos normally like this? He never went above 20mph so he may not have noticed but I nearly shot off the edge of bridge when I took it for its first spin so I may have to put new discs and pads on unless they are normally like this???

I've had two polos (1983 and 1988). Brakes are terrible as standard. There is no servo and although the car only weighs 725 kg they aren't really up to job. If it were me I probably just live with them. You do get used to it after a while. When I changed by 1983 polo for a sierra I nearly put myself through the windscreen the first time I used the brakes!

As Lowlander said - no sevo so brakes are pretty poor unless of course you really stamp on them!!!!
Lovely colour, but who cares it's clean and tidy and better than getting dings, scrapes etc on your pride and joy.

You can't put dings and scrapes in it, you're neighbour will cry every time he sees one.
That is in stunning nick for a 20 year old car: treat it well and you'll make money when you sell it. Naturally, you'll share any profits with the old boy too

Without intending to be cheeky. Would it not be cheaper to save the purchase price and running costs of said ****box and use the money to repair any dings or scrapes come sale time????

Its great running around in a car you dont care about. You dont need to wash it, can put any old crap in it and leave it anywhere you like.

Make sure the linkage is in good nick - there will be some slop in a 20 year old car.

Although having said that I think a true ****box shouldn't cost more than £500

How about this:
Cost of car £200 with 11 months MOT and 1 months tax
Additinal expenses for the year = £110 12 months road tax
Value of car when sold in 12 months £160 (min.)
Cost for car over 1 year £200+110 - £160 = £150
£150 to run a shopping car for 1 year, im not sure how much a dent in your car costs to fix or how much it will cost if your car is stolen when you visit some pikey council estate but im sure it will be more than £150!
Also you have the fun of dumping/parking your car "anywhere" and not have to worry about it

Pub cars rule.
You can pile your mates in, dump 'em on the kerb outside the pub, and when it's covered in pizza boxes the next morning, it's funny. Try that with your shiny Subaru or X5.
My mate is king of the crap car: once paid a round of drinks for a Toyota Corolla, got over 2 years motoring with zero mechanical woes, and sold it at profit. Now running a 30,000 mile Cavalier which honestly looks like brand new, all for £200. He'll get a year out of it and bang it in the paper for £495. Cheap motoring.
Talking of Cavaliers, the wealthiest person I know (a customer of ours, Sunday Times Rich List listed, eccentric) ALWAYS runs a complete sh1tter: he has recently scrapped his daily drive: a Cav 1.6L (all that money and not even an SRi) with close on 200k miles. The MOT man said no more.
My last smoker died a death recently, met a sticky end.
Gutted.
