Default Change of plan, 4k-5k car

I recently made a post on here regarding a sub 7 second 0-60 car for 6k. Well I was just about to get the clio cup (finance agreed just had to pick it up) and the mrs decided we couldnt afford it, not happy! Anyway, I'm now looking into a car between 4k and 5k that will hit 60 in under 7. Again insurance is an issue so no skylines or cosworths.

The two cars I've been looking at so far are the Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo (Went to look at one today which was advertised as a turbo but when I got there the salesman wasn't sure as it had been debadged, so some snooping round the engine bay confirmed it wasn't, think he was trying to pull the wool over my eyes) and a Nissan Pulsar GTI-R, but I don't wanna go too old.

Any recommendations? Thanks again

The repair bills for a fiat coupe turbo or a pulsar gtir can be very high and they go wrong a lot!

Do you fancy a Legacy RS. It's a twin turbo, about 280bhp 0-60 in just under 6 seconds but quite discrete. Four doors, plenty of leg room, a big boot and handles well.

Rubbish!....just read the other Pulsar thread from a few days back, they arn't as bad as people make out, but they are, after all, an old turbo'd 4wd car now. I've had mine for nearly 6 years and touch wood, my box is still going strong. But its true, they can cost a bit to run, insurance etc.

Why 60 in under 7secs? Maybe you should look at 100 figures instead, to give more of an idea of performance. A 306Gti-6 is close to 7secs (and 100 in 20) and is a great drivers car, cheap to run too. And my old miss' one kept up with 172 mk2's no problem.

200SX S14 is another option, if you like yours to be rwd. Or an MR2 Turbo, but you really need to check insurance.

0-100mph in 20s isnt what i'd call a performance car though?

200sx tho as mentioned is easy to mod.
celica st205 for £5k might need £££work, but will run v low 5s 0-60 and 15s 0-100mph in std form.

I only mentioned the Gti-6 becuase he was originally looking at the Clio, I know 0-100 in 20seconds is hardly quick (mine does it in half that time, but still could be far quicker) but if he was looking at the clio then the 6 has similar performance and is still a great drivers car, epsecially for 4k. What I was saying is that 7sec to 60 might sound quick, but 100 might come up in 25plus seconds, or more, and its the 100 time that will show up the difference in peformance between cars. He needs to set a bench mark for 100 too, and 20 is not unreasonable for 7sec cars.

But even with the website I run, I still think too many people get obsessed with performance figures, I certainly wouldn't buy a car on just its 60 or 100 figures. Cars like the Gti-6, 106 Gti, the clio williams, etc, even an MX5, are not that quick, but are great cars to have great fun in with loads of feedback.

nisr227 - I agree - I did my real car driving 'lessons' in a GTi-6 and MX5 over a number of years, both superb cars whatever the figures say. Although I enjoy stuff that goes a bit quicker now I'm not sure its actually more fun than these cars offer. Lower limits of grip and more feedback are just as much fun as huge power and high speed - for me anyway.

My first ever run over the mountain on the IOM was in a MX5 1.8 Sport and it was great, plenty of oversteeer in the slow stuff and then composed through the fast sweepers. No matter how many times I have been across that road since nothing (Scoob, M3, Boxster, RX8 etc) can quite match the connection the MX5 had, hard to explain and truly a great drivers car.

And the GTi-6 at the 'ring - sublime, Pugs were well ahead of the game at that time. Even though the Scoob is massively quicker I never feel as engaged by the machine...does that make any sense??

Ok I've decided to get the Supra SZ. Anything I should be checking when I go to buy except the obvious checks? Are there any known faults or problems I should be looking for? How many miles are the engines good for?
Thanks
