Chipped VAG diesels - mpg?
Hi,
I've got a Passat estate 130 Sport. Was thinking of getting it chipped at some stage. Various people have said that this also makes it more economical. Can those that have had this done post on a) what 'chip' was used b) any difference (up or down) in mpg and c) how they measured - i.e. brim to brim tank figures, on-board mpg meter etc
Thanks
Dave

Hi
A remapped vag will result in several things. A cluch life of 5000-30000 miles. A front tyre life of 5000-15000 miles, and last of all crappy econamy - lol.
I had a Fabia vRS that did 34 mpg post remap, and 37 pre remap. When I was driving sensibly I managed 50mpg on the motorway without any trouble. The theory is the remap has more power and thus less throttle is needed to achieve the same speeds, and thus you use less fuel. However the temptation was a bit too much for me.................

Group buy of Upsolute remaps available at www.ukpassats.co.uk by the way, around £250
Good point about trip computer versus actual brim-to-brim measurements, I know the resistor mod for the fuel temp sensor artificially inflates mpg figures and I've never found out if remaps do the same.

I had a golf 150 Tdi, i had that superchips thing done,
i didnt notice that much differance on mpg but it made it smoke quite alot.
It rolling roaded at 178bhp & somthing like 278lbs of torque.

Revo'd Golf PD150 here, same fuel economy as before, 40mpg if driven properly, or as much as 55 if stuck in traffic etc etc..
Goes very well too (more importantly!), only downside is front tyres wear rather rapidly
Go for it, trust me you wont regret it!!

In my experience chipping a diesel doesn't make the mpg any worse or any better. The reason perhaps it doesn't make it any better is because you are so tempted to floor it more often at every opportunity!
I haven't found a reason why I shouldn't have chipped my Fabia
like others have said "Go for it and enjoy!"
this is based on my experience of an AMD one click device which is great cos I can choose the standard or 'enhanced' map
