Sierra Sapphire Cosworth.

Sierra Sapphire Cosworth.
Hi All,
Went to have a quick nosey around a saph cosworth the other day that was for sale. Never really considered one before, however I think insurance may not be too bad now at 22 with 5yrs no claims possibly on a classic policy.
So what are peoples thoughts on a 4x4 for around 5k? I will hopefully be in a position to buy a house in the next year so whatever car I get must be easy to sell and not have lost too much money.
The fastest performace car I have owner to date is a standard 200sx S14a, so how would the sierra compare to that and say a similiar priced scoob?
Would it be a viable every day car or is it best to factor in a runaround too?
How do running costs compare to other similiar cars and does it feel like an 'old car'?
Any other thoughts would be appreciated too.
thx

Most will have had a hard life. Lots will be stolen/recovered. Lots will be tuned, and lots will have been in some kind of bump.
Be very careful and do your homework, as a bad one will just need money constantly thrown at it. Most I've seen about are quite poor.
If I was ever to buy a Cossie now, I think I'd only buy one that was Concourse standard, as it'll have been looked after.

5k gets you a nice scoob these days, probably a decent STi5 280bhp classic, about on a P-reg.
On the other hand the Cosworth is a lot rarer and of course a bit of a legend. Bound to hold its a value better then the scoob (probably get your money back when you came to sell it assumes you kept it nice)
A lot of crash damage however, so hpi check a must. Only off-puts would be a horrible 80's interior (classic scoob interiors are ****e too however..), and rust (is a ford after all!)

I would suggest looking at an ST205 Celica GT4... Guy I know thats 21 with 1 yrs NCB just bought a Jap Import and insured it for about £1400, which I didnt think was too bad for a 280bhp 4WD car at his age/NCB.

The Cosworth is a nice car, but just be very careful when finding one.
HPI check is vital, and check the car fully.
Also be aware the every person i know who has had a Cosworth (7 or 8 people) has had to built the engine at least once, and if it is a 4x4 the gearbox could be a weakness aswell.
Lovely car though, and i would possibly suggest a 4x4 will have has less abuse than a 2wd one.

The fact the cosworth market is a bit of a minefield does put me off a little - as does my limited mechanical knowledge which would no doubt be a plus point when looking at or owning one of these cars.
Insurance should hopefully be ok esp if I can get it on some sort of classic policy.
With regards to the S14a, I was just saying that it is the fastest car I have owned to date and wondered how it would compare. Not to fussed about going for another though.
Keep em coming

Been there, and bought the t-shirt three times!
I have to say, out of all three I owned I really enjoyed it
I looked long and hard each time I got one, getting a better one than the last. And on each occasion they were completely standard and owned by people who really did not know what they were! The last and best one I owned had covered just over 30k and was dark blue rare colour, although the actual name of it escapes me. It was a 4x4 Sapphire in the last year they were made and had leather and air-con and a sun-roof. It had all the paperwork from new, including the original bill of sale with all the options boxes ticked by the owner. The owner used to take it to the dealer and pay their labour rates for replacing light bulbs. He also used to get them to valet it LOL
There are nice ones out there, try to find a concourse one as invariably the rusty/dodgy bits have been replaced by people have too much time on their hands!
Good luck

My 4x4 has been lying in a building in the yard for years, i always keep saying that i will rebuild it, but dont ever seem to get round to it.
Its a rare "rouge" version
To me its not worth selling, maybe this year i will get round to starting it at least

i've had 2 sapphire cosworths, one in magenta and another one in black, i'd say the magenta is the best colour for them and looks stunning, the black looked good too though til it got nicked to be used as a getaway car, always insured my RS's with the RS owners clubs own insurance and by doing that your even covered for track days too.

I had a 2wd saff for just under a year, had no problems with it AT ALL! unlike the scoob, great fun drifting and i would have another but would have to be 2wd for the fun factor. Brought for 2600 and sold for 3000, only cash i spent on it was some wheels and serviced it myself.

I remember reading somewhere if your buying a cossie make sure you have enough money aside for a rebuild. Worrying!
How fast is an untuned one now? How does one compare to say an 98 model uk turbo? Not interested in tuned ones as any turbo can be tuned just standard performance.

Carnt comment on a 4x4 saff because i had a 2wd and that would pull a few car lengths on a UK turbo up to the rev limiter in 4th (130ish) but compared to my mates WRX it was the other way round.
