Default Runabout needed R5 turbo or Mk II Golf?

Will soon need a runabout to communte to work. Only about a 15 mile round trip.

My head tells me to buy an old jalopy or a diesel for much cheapness but my heart says buy an old fun hot hatch.

I've always wanted a Renault 5 turbo and I think it's an itch I'm going to have to scratch. That said, it's becoming near on impossible to find one that hasn't got a ridiculous body kit or built in destruction button (in car adjustable boost ). Would love a raider but even harder to find

I've also been thinking about a MK II Golf GTI - although most say go for the 8v, think I'd prefer a 16v. Seems the more sensible option, better build and reliability but finding one that hasn't done 160K is proving to be difficult. A nice MK I would be ideal but good examples seem to fetch £3,500 upwards which I really can't justify.

Any other suggestions? Don't really want to spend more than £2,000 if possible. Disregard Pug 205's or nova's - not a big fan and Mk I clio 16v (already had one).

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions much appreciated

Chris

What are you looking to spend buying this runabout???

gtt - theres a very good chance its been ragged within an inch of its life & could cost you a packet to keep on the road!!

Id go for the golf, or what about a corrado 1.8 16v??

what about a Toyata Celica http://www.celicas.co.uk/5th-Generation-Celicas.htm I had one for about 6 years , 80k on the clock and never missed a beat , very reliable in my experiance . The longest I ever owned a car I think

Bit sad to buy a ?2.0 engine for a 15-mile round trip... it would barely be warmed up after the 7.5 miles before being switched off.

Don't fancy any of those I'm afraid.

Will be used for more than just commuting.

Think I mention above what my budget is

Plenty of good GTTs around, just the good clean std looking cars are fetching more money than the hideous looking bodykitted cars.

The golf is going to be more reliable IMO especially being N/A rather than using a turbo car for a short journey to work and back but saying that the GTT does warm up pretty sharpish.

I've been hunting through e-bay, auto trader, exchange and mart and haven't seen one good gtt yet, where are they hiding

Really like this but a bit expensive.

Really really like this but, alas, a bit on the expensive side again

That is

Can you give me a few details, mileage, spec, cost, etc.

If I can't find a decent GTT that's exactly what I'm looking for.

There's plenty of decent gtt's out there, just get hunting and be a bit patient. Most of the sheds get dumped on ebay these days. I would say that the rtoc.org classifieds would be a good place to look, but the site is going through some changes and I don't think the classifieds are viewable at the moment unless you're a paid up member.

They're cheap as chips to run! The only expensive thing that springs to mind is a clutch change, if you pay someone to do it (about £200 labour, £60 for an uprated clutch). Even parts direct from Renault aren't too expensive quite a lot of the time, apart from oil pumps (£460 + vat). Parts are easily available, both new and second hand. You just need to know the right places to look

I recognise that car from a long while back. Can't picture where though. Oldskool cool styling

Here's my road car that i've had for 6 years. It's being put back to a more standard look though when I finally get round to it:

This is my gtt coupe. I've owned it for 15 months and it gets plenty of abuse at track days:

thats some great motors mate, getting harder to find a good one now but worth the hunt and miles more fun to drive than the golf

i also had a white phase 1 before that one, loved it too!

before i had the 5s though i had an 11 turbo, what a sleeper that was

Cheers mate. There's actually a lot more good gtt's out there these days than people think. There's quite a few being restored back to standard condition now that people are appreciating them for what they are, a classic 80's hot hatch. Unfortunatly a lot of the old rumors/negative pub talk still follow them about like the plague!

11 Turbo's are brilliant. Along with the 9 Turbo they're brilliant sleepers

Hey mr Bill J hiding out on scooby sites!

Chris i think you should go for a gt turbo over a golf, the gtt is sooo much fun and can easily be tuned to eat standard imprezas and tuned ones too!!
i know this as before i owned my scoob i had a highly tuned gtt and had so much fun in it..i had owned it for 5 years but it came to a point where i had to sell it and buy the scoob..but now i'm starting to miss it again and sometimes would like another 1.

Must say, the R5 GTT is my preferred choice and will keep hunting for a good one but if a decent GTI comes up in the interim I might be swayed. DAMM my impatience

Cheers for the comments so far.

Sold mine a year ago, 1989 16v, with big bumpers EW and PAS (essential!), for £950. Just fitted front brakes, shocks, SS exhaust and 4 into 1 manifold, 15's and new tyres. Bargain for him

(I decided I really should just buy a Scoob while I could!)
