BMW X5 OR 330D M SPORT
I am thinking of changing the scoob for one of the above i have arranged a test drive in a 330d on wednesday but i would like to hear from anyone who has either an X5 or a 330d just for good points, bad points, performance handlng and braking etc. If i decide to go for one of the abve it will be a used one maybe an 04 or 54 reg
Thanks Karl

Considering the recent posts regarding X5's you run the risk of being branded as a selfish, idiotic, tasteless, shallow, crass, inconsiderate and inability to drive a pointless vehicle. Well I say bull to all that. Depends on how much you are prepared to spend and what sort of driving you will be doing. Get an X5 3.0d.

I have an X5 3.0D 54 reg and cannot fault it at all. Very relaxing drive but only manage 20mpg around town if you are stop start.

Hi mate i currently drive a highish powered(380bhp)type r scooby but i bought the wife a 330d sport(4dr)just under 2 years ago..it is the later 6 speed 204bhp model(03) and i drive it quite alot.To put it bluntly this particular bmw in my opinion one of the best cars pound for pound cars on the planet. It's not just the power or the unbelievable torque of the engine + the fact that it averages 40 mpg, they are simply outstanding and if you get the sport model they have the suspension to match the performance of the engine(doesn't even sound like a diesel). However on the dilemma you are facing(x5 or 330d) that is where the one problem with the 3 series arises and that is the lack of rear passenger leg-room and boot space.
I am actually toying with the idea of selling it/upgrading for an x5 myself because with the little ones(pushchairs etc)we could really do with a little more space, but if space isn't a neccesity for you i would have no doubts whatsover in recommending the 330d
Good luck with whatever you decide mate

A mate has a 330d. He drives "enthustiastically". Hes on his second engine and reckons the back is far too loose. (many years ago he owned a spitfire and also used to own a Chimera so hardly a RWD novice).
On anything other than business he takes the wife's car.....ppp Forester.

No its not. If you consider the 3.0D does 20-22 around town and the 4.4 does 17 and then you apply he premium in diesel costs then the price is not vastly different per mile. The diesel fuel economy jumps far higher once cruising but if you live in a stop start area they are not very different.

had both of these at the same time, the 330d sports a lovely car inside and out but i found it more cramped than my classic impreza and harder on the suspension, it just wasnt for me. on longish runs getting 30-32mpg from the x5, it doesnt feel any slower than the 330d and is just nicer in every way imho.
suffice it to say theres only one bm in the garage now and it drives all the wheels.

Gone from a WRX to a 330d sport touring, and everything said above is right: the rear room isn't great in the back - there's more space in my wife's honda civic which is a lot shorter! Back end is playful mostly through power oversteer, which is a laugh and besides traction control is there if you want it. Suspension is harder than the WRX by quite some way with the sport setup. I love the interior though, it feels like it wraps around you.
535d touring would be best car for me at the moment, but that ain't going to happen
Any update, Karl?

Would you like them with the 535d sitting all by its self or with its partner in crime the 330d Cab altogether in one pose ??
