am thinking about getting a pulsar gtir as my scoob died last year.

i had a my99 sti, with the only mods turbo back exhaust.

how would a gtir with exhaust and filter compair to it?

anyone owned both?

Pulsars only really come alive after you shove a bar+ up their chuffers

I've had 2 Rs, one running 1.2 bar, the other 1.4; at 1.4 bar, they're little animals

Hi mate , ive had three Scoobs , uk turbo,jdm,wrx and an sti type r v5 and now own an H-reg GTiR,

I will tell you with a hand on my heart that a pulsar modded to 280bhp would give an equally powered sti a right hammering and thats coming from a tried and tested view.

Get a Gtir mate, they are like pot noodles , so wrong but yet so right

Got to admit those little Pulsars are like rockets, I had a blast with one at Santa Pod last year, and he gave me a right hammering and he managed a 12.9.

I asked him what he had done to it and he said only a exhaust system and turned the boost up and esitimated it was running 250bhp. If I wanted to get 12.9 in my scoob I would have to have about 340bhp.

Very nice cars, but have heard engine rebuilds are in the region of £5k, Can some ex pulsar owners correct me if Im wrong.

Great little cars IMO . Look mental, and 4wd 2lt turbo power in a hatch back has got to be a winner, although i've heard that the gearbox is weaker than a soggy biscuit

Think the problem is when you fit a paddle clutch... it smashes the gearbox apart, where an organic clutch is a more civilised alternative.

Pretty sure that Gearbox and Brakes are lifted straight from the 150bhp non-turbo GTi.. and are completely useless in the GTi-R!!

gearbox internals are the same as the nissan blubird....

Although not the best I suspect its a bit like scoob ownership. You see some scoobs that have very few miles and treated with cotton wool and they've spat gears all over the place. Yet some get thrashed every day and hold together like glue.

GTIRs are the same to a point. I know a guy who went through 3 engines all running over 350 and each one on the OE 'box.

Not suggesting the box is any good and I had mined changed from a 3 paddle clutch to an OE clutch and that still slipped!

As for power outputs, they feel alot faster than scoobs I assume due to being smaller. Plus the gearing (I think) is quite low which gives them the edge over UK scoob boxes anyway.

Sod it, next 6 months sell the scoob and buy the best R I can find!

I had a Pulsar which I loved at the time. I'd say the Pulsar and my scoob were quite closely matched, but my scoob is better now since I got it remapped.
Watch out for that dreaded gtir gearbox failure.....it happened to me!

Im much happier with the Scooby than the Pulsar.

I used to have an R and a friend had a multitude of Scoobs, they're great little cars and the gearboxes generally aren't too bad unless you abuse them. Mine did die a death, but that was due to me being a complete muppet with my gear changes, it lasted a good couple of years (with 310bhp) until it died.

One thing I would say is that despite being quicker than the Scoob mine didn't have the same punch in the back as my mates MY96 Classic, although when he went to a later car (MY00 I believe) the difference wasn't as pronounced.

Is 12.4 on about 260bhp quick enough?

The average 1bar (280bhp) Gtir will do high 12s normally.

I used to have a slightly modded gtir (engine, tarox 6 pots, dp spec cams, suspension), great in a straight line, but **** handling and standard brakes. The brakes are lifted straight from the GTI so extra 70+ horses and extra weight for the 4wd doesnt really go. Chocolate gearboxes as well, so much look at the gearbox wrong and it will fail. Mine did on a main road resulting in all 4 wheels being locked.
Will keep up with a scoob (standard and slightly modded) on a straight but come to a corner and it just wants to understeer (worse than a fwd). In fact, I actually owned a metro gta at the same time, and no word of a lie the metro was a better handling car (and more fun) - You cant beat the bonnet though on a gtir!

I love my pulsar.Id say its a car you own with your heart though.The gearbox thing is pure luck,mine was running 350bhp for the last year with regular launches and its still fine.Although after the last few upgrades i,ll be putting in an uprated gearbox just for peace of mind for regular trips to the ring.

They do seem to be rare, even when you can pick one up between £3-5k, Shame classic Scoobys didnt go the same way.

They come with quad throttle bodies as standard! Used to pot a round in my brothers many years ago 'tis was beast i tell 'ye. It had 330bhp and eventually dropped a cog (4th gear) but that was after fitting a rather large turbo. Modified correctly it will be reliable.

Right ill tell you a bit about mine,bucket seats, it had bigger, better 4 pot Willwood brakes, Uprated exhaust, coilover susp, and also a black cloth type matieral which was all over the dash board, like the rally cars have, handled much better than the scoob, and went much quicker, although I did not manage to turn up the boost, sold it, like the scoob as it has less problems, problems with the R's will be,
engine and piston ring will go as they are getting old, mine was an L reg so one of the later models, I think they made it up to M or N reg very rare,
Gearbox will be on way out if u can hear it whining type of noise, also clutch, can slip with extra bhp,
However a std gearbox has managed a 10.9 quater
Turbo, if u see smoke could be problems, most may have shaft play,
Brakes if not changed, may be wraped,
The engine probelms will be due to the jap cars mapped for 100 ron fuel and optimax is good but not good enough, also with them being old, most will be battered
However if u look on www.gtiroc.com, you will find many cars and better parts available, people will be selling engines with forged items, bigger turbos, and quaif gear box's, with better clutch's,
So to sum it up better than the scoob in terms of , handling, conering etc, bad maintenance and high costs, old cars, some have alot of rust, make sure you check it has not been in an accident too,
Best thing is a BMW or Porsche next to u they think ur one of those puessie type guys with a 1.2 corsa or something, then the look on there face when the lights change
hard to say, which I think is better but some things I liked about it, but keeping the scoob, would not go back unless found a mint, super clean, one again like my old one....

a update every one, i picked up a gtir on friday, and so far am v impressed.

it is not as quick as my sti was, but the gtir is running standard boost, but the handling is soooo much better than the scoob, but that could be doen to tein coilovers :-) it just sticks sticks stickc to the road !!!
