Default R5's

Looking at getting a pre-tuned R5 GT with around 170bhp..

whats the pros and cons of running one?

Are they fast say to keep up with a typical RS escort..

TBH - i think they are a bit of a waste of time. If you are a avid supporter of the 5 Turbo, then get one. But if you are after a bit of a classic hot hatch - then there are better cars that break down less.

Are you after a turbo hatch then I take it ?

Personally, I would get an original car, rather than a hybrid. Is there any preference other than that ?

for my cash I would have a 200SX. They are generally reliable, easy to tune and look quite nice, oh and have a 40% locking diff

I had a GTT for 6 years and its the best car I've driven/owned.. loved it to bits and everyone else did who came out in it... if you look after them and sort the cooling out then there just as reliable as another car. one day I'll probably get another one

A 200bhp GTT will see off most cars on the road IMO.. also they weigh about 990kg so they shift

830kg's as said by Renault

Why does everyone still think these cars are unreliable? The only thing that makes them unreliable is kids fitting bleed valves to them and winding the boost up through the roof without sorting the fuelling! Luckily those days are becomming a thing of the past and people are starting to treat these cars a lot better. A lot of them are also being returned to standard spec, so good ones aren't as rare as you might think.

I've owned one of mine for 6 years and it's never caused me any major problems yet. No blown turbos, no blown h/g's etc etc. And It's not exactly a standard spec engine! The cars are bullet proof if you look after them properly. The only thing is that they are getting on a bit now so breaking/suspension components etc will probably need replacing due to old age.

I also own one of the gtt coupe's that ran in the Renault 5 elf cup series. That gets used and abused on track days and again, has never had a mechanical failure.

You look after the 5, and the 5 will look after you

the likely hood of buying a mint reliable one is low. at the above commenter. all well and good looking after it, but it the pervious 60000 owners in its million year life aint, which is most likely, on a over tuned french 1400, it will go wrong.

Disagree, lots of brilliant examples out there, you tell them billy boy.

Adam, your 5 probably weighed 990kgs cause it had your fat ar$e sat in it

Again, owned my 5 for about 6 years now, apart from it being off the road the last 2 years its not caused me any problems, no turbo failures, no hedgaskets, as billy says, make sure the fueling is right and theyre a much better car than many classic hot hatches. IMO its even better than the 205 but thats always going to be defended by the Pug owners

Oh dear, oh dear. Someone's been listening to too many pub stories!

There are plently of gtt's out there with very few owners, in very good condition. And why will it go wrong? As I said, i've had no problems in 6 years of gtt ownership. One of my cars is running a pretty heavily modified engine (flowed this, L&B that, hot cam, big turbo etc) and it's never let me down. And I used it as an every day car up until 3 months ago

11.4 is the current record. And that car/engine has done 300 odd 1/4 mile runs with no problems (apart from an alternator belt jumping off, cooking a gasket). Surely enough proof that these engines are reliable when tuned if looked after.

Had mine for 7 years (2 in dry storage). Sold it a few years back for stupid money (read not much) and regretted it ever since.
