Default Clio 172 Sport exhaust help ** Genuine reason**

People,

I need help off of previous or owners of Clio 172 sports.

My girlfriend owns a 172 (2002 /52 model) and her middle section of the exhaust has gone.

We are thinking of getting a S/S system. Cat-back and back box section. But also looking at maybe getting a new/used standard mid/back section if one comes up.

I need to know if there is an exhaust out there in stainless steel that is the following.

1). Value for money

2). Not to bling or in your face.

3). Not noisy, but has at healthy sporty tone to it without ear bursting effects.

This is a genuine question so looking for helpful answers rather than Scoob vs Clio Sport thread.

We have been looking on line at some systems (Sportex, Magnex, and Devil) but with cannot find anywhere that does sounds etc so we can check out how loud they are. We have also looked at sites like Prima Racing, K- Tec.....but they only seem to have the LOUD exhausts.

Please help as we need one ASAP.

Thanks for your time

Steve

Try www.cliosport.net. I'm sure you can now buy performance, s/steel exhausts that are still hidden, like the standard jobbie!

Yummy? She may as well have "Chlamydia" emblazoned across her top

Does anyone actually think that the aural qualities of a typical in line four lend themselves to this sort of "improvement"? People suffer it on turbo cars because there are massive gains to be had with exhausts, otherwise blissful silence is nice?

Not an owner, but I wouldn't have thought you'd go too far wrong with Magnex. But avoid a Sportex....?

Thanks for the reply guys. Please all keep them coming.

Bluenose172, we did see this on cliosport earlier but I think she thinks it is to bling for her. http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=109227
Does the magnex sound OK? It cannot be too loud as she remembers my 6x4 oval centre exit system by GT Tuning many years ago. I think she thinks it will sound like that?

Lord Bass thanks for that link. Do you know how quick they can put a system together at all and price terms? I'm in the south London surroundings.

Thanks for your help folks. Please keep them coming as more help the better. If anyone has any links to sounds of a Clio Sport with a s/s that would be very helpful.

Hey Bob, honest mate. It is for the better half. I can't fault the car at all. She's happy with it and thats what counts. Besides the rose red colour she has it in doesn't suit me.

haywood & scott are doing them & as someone said Cliosport members have loads of different ones & they organise group buys as well. S/Steel one well worth it if your system is rotten as the new one will probulary have a lifetime warrenty to boot Ask on Cliosport as there maybe someone near you that you can go & see & have a look / listen at their system.

My car was used as the prototype for the Janspeed system and I can recommend it for additional power. It was however loud on a long run and pretty tiresome.

They can usually build the system same day depending on your needs. Price depends on what u want if you have a dealer thats local to u pop in or give them a bell they should be able to give you an idea of price over the phone.

magnex exhausts are usually quiet mate tbh. I had a k-tec one on mine and it was very loud, iirc, most of the exhausts on 172s are loud! why not just get one made and then you can choose how it looks/sounds? those style exhausts do compliment clios though! and for 200 it aint bad!

and a cheeky couple to show u how nice clios are! ;-)

I had a Magnex cat back on a 51 plate 172 a while back, twin 3.5" pipes looked OTT and it was quite loud.
The standard mid + backbox are 1 piece so if you got a 2nd hand 1 you'd either have to chop it to get it over the axle or drop the axle to keep it together when fitting.

I had a powerflow before, but I wouldn't go back there, the back box was fine but the rest from the cat back was covered in rust within six months. Just my opinion though.

cant go wrong with magnex imo ,,avoid powerflow or similar rubbish at all costs ,,very poor build quality and low grade steel in comparison,i had one made on the car ,have since removed it and bought a GOOD exhaust, only custom folk id use (and have used) is hayward and scott.

Thanks all for taking the time to reply and send links.

In the end She has gone for this. http://www.motorspeed.com/store_main...roduct_id=1650

It may not be the best but I'm sure she will be happy with it. Price was a main factor seem as I have just brought new tyres for the scoob and xmas has wiped us out. Otherwise If it was for me the Magnex would be on the cards.

She did try and see if this was still avalible but couldn't wait any longer for a reply. http://www.cliosport.net/forum/showthread.php?t=109227

Clarkie172 , fine example mate. What size are those oz super L's?

Thanks again.

Cheers buddy! I miss it! I sold it wanting to buy a scooby but after driving 2 bug eye wrx's i was dissapointed and going for a leon now. Wheels are 17s mate. Nice choice on exhaust style, cant comment on their sound/performance but i imagine it will be decent!

K -Tec definately make a stealth system! my mate has got one on his, and it isnt very loud! another friend if mine has a 172 cup and he bought a magnex, but they just dont look right! the clio bumper doesnt suit the sticky out look, so he bought a standard one again! in my opinion you cant beat the standard one, i work for renault anb both the k-tec and the magnex took ages lo line up right so they didnt rattle! the standard one fits, and is more than adequate for the job!! hope this helps.

Don't know where you live but Pro-Speed in Cardiff are well worth a trip.
It is an independant company and Charlie will custom fit you a stainless steel exhaust system that is second to none.
I went for the type of system you seem to be looking for on my 172.
Hidden OEM style tailpipe, quiet when cruising at around 80mph and about town but a bit meatier when given some stick.
It is an excellent fit as well with far better ground clearance.
They have a fantastic reputation on Cliosport and I highly recommend them whatever your car.

We had the same dilemma as our 02 172 needed a new one. OE exhaust was over £500

Went for the powerflow and got them to make the pipe look like the standard exhaust, tucked under the bumper, which was fine. Also asked for the quietest exhaust possible. Its fine until you get up to 60+, but then its still too loud, very boomy. It also rattles when you pull away at low speed

£300 though and I suppose at least it'll last forever. GF isnt happy with it, but are they ever

Pro-Speed was £289.
No rattle. No boom

I test drove a 172 with a magnex and it sounded awful tbh, but then I've never been a fan of "farty" exhausts.

Annoying thing is from the factory on the 172 the middle section and backbox are all welded as one section, you need to change both iirc which my mechanic has quoted 300 fitted. But even then that will be in two parts as the replacements you buy are in two pieces bolted together as normal, not the welded versions.

K-Tec do a "stealth" system that retains the hidden pipe, but I've also heard these a little noisey, I'd really like to keep the stock look.

Unhappy

before having my current megane 225, i had a clio 172 mk1. When the exhaust rusted through i got the stealth exhaust from k tec. From the outside the exhaust is indeed stealth in looks and sound and very well made. Inside however it was boomy at motorway speeds and to be honest my weekly commutes from newcastle to leuchars left me with a thumping head ache.

If you do decide to get one make sure you get a new rear exhaust mount the weight of the new exhaust will knacker the old one in minutes. As i found out
