I've owned Clio 172 Cup, Clio 182 with Cup packs, and a CTR and I'd take a Clio again tomorrow.
Wouldn't touch the CTR with a bargepole! In fact the CTR was the shortest period I've ever owned a car! 3 whole months!

How important is a warranty?
9 ish will get you a year old 182 with Cup packs and 2 years warrantly.
I would not spend 13k on a Clio, you might get a 182 trophy for that, but you'll lose 3-4k in a year.

Had a CTR for 3 Years, loved every minute of it, M8 of mine had a Clio 182 with cup pack, great car in a "old school" kinda of way, i just could never live with either the looks, the driving position (being 6 ft 3 it really is way too small for me) or the build quality.
In my eyes the CTR is better in every department apart from steering feedback and maybe outright chuckability. CTR engine and gearbox have got to be one of the best in any production hatchback EVER IMHO. 8250 RPM redline and the best soundtrack once u get a quailty cold air Induction kit known to any 2 litre n/a engine, makes all the difference to me. Oh and in the 3 years and 30k Miles Nothing ever went wrong or fell off apart from the Alarm had to be swapped. (tryin getting a 182 owner to say the same thing after 3 years)

I owned a CTR from new for 18 months and loved it. My girlfriend now has a Clio 182 with Cup pack (better than buying a CUP) and has had it for 6 months and I rate it as a car.
For myself as an ownership proposition though, I would go for the CTR as it is a bigger car and the 182 is really too small for my own liking. Also as previously stated the soundtrack from the CTR combined with the engine/ gearbox combination gives it the edge.
You'll have to take them both out for a test drive though and make your own mind up though.

Without even thinking the CTR. Even if it was a compnay car I would still avoid the renault. Honda v Renault, for reliabailty, build quality, dealers attitude, abillty to fix problems, (or lack of ability in the case of renault), its an easy answer
Loved mine CTR could not fault it drive it 18 months like I stole it. kow some people dont get on with the VTEC engine, but loved it at the time. Only went to garage for service, not a thing wrong with it at all.
Have a look at the clio forums before making any decision, there seems to a fair few clio with problems such as seats not attached.
Just look at the post of here with people complaining abaout Renault dealers and clios in general.

Never had a problem with my 2nd 172, bar a rattling centre section, fixed first time. CTR's this time of year are just a complete joke to drive.

Out of CTR/182/172 cup it's quite a hard choice. As an every day do it all car I'd have the CTR every single time. However, if it was a specific hot-hatch where there exists in the family a good quality 4 door saloon, etc then I'd probably get the 172 cup and some mods as £ for £ it gives more thrills n' spills.

Theres no doubt a Honda is a nice place to be - if thats what you want.
I really did enjoy my test drive, I just did not see it as being 7k better than the cup we bought. (17k with air con and zero miles against 10k for a pre reg cup with climate)
I have been to Germany in the back if a Civic, and been very comfortable, I would not be saying the same if I was in the back of a Clio.

Re the post above about the CTR being a joke to drive in this weather, well Any FWD car with 200 bhp can be a bit twitchy if you drive it like a numpty
My CTR has 280 fly bhp, yet the powerband is very linnear and the throttle response is superb, there is absolutely no reason why you should be unable to get the power down progressivly. You can punch out of corners very quickly by feeding the right amount of power in. Of course it will never be the same as say an Evo or Scooby in those conditions, you just have to drive her right and she wil look after you
Part of the issue of the CTR is the bridgstone tyres, a tad over firm in imho. Swapping them over to Toyo's was one of the best things I have done to the Civic. poor weather manners are much improved.
I commute everyday from Oxford to Bath in mine, over a variety of roads, and never had an issue. Despite the extra oomph in mine, I still manage to make 4 return journies on a tank of gas, not too bad.
As for practicality, loads of room in the back, comfortable driving position, huge boot space. The only downside is will you miss 4 doors?

owned a scooby before the evo so not really an option, but maybe the high revving wheel spinning understeering car might just change her mind back to 4wd turbo charged cars

I really can't comment on the traction issue with the CTR as I've not driven it enough or in bad enough weather. I can certainly see how the vtec power delivery could be a total nightmare in the wet but unlike a turbo car the vtec is not on/off but very linear and in the case of the S2000 can be moderated well. My 2.0s 60ft times IMHO testify that with some skill and practise you can moderate wheel spin even at the high rpms.
I love vtec cars but I also love turbo cars. I'm not saying one is any better than the other - they are just different and have different strengths. Vtec offers me a fine control and instant response that wasn't there in my scooby but at the expense of low down grunt and the feeling of being pinned in your seat. I see too many people put the vtec system down almost out of principle. Perhaps it isn't suited to the ctr and in fairness, having been in both, for making progress on british roads a 172 cup probably would be a better choice.
Just don't think that because you can't master vtec that nobody can. It is a very good and useable way of making good power out of a light, reliable and small engine unit.

think its all been said already. i owned a clio sport for 2.5 yrs without any faults whatsoever and was moderately happy with performance. when i sold it i lost a packet, and if it was me in your situation i would go for the ctr, if you get bored of it atleast you can re sell and get most if not all the money back.
