Default Supra for Drifting

anyone have any experience, i want a road car i can take to the odd drift meeting run by a track day club so nothing competitive, i fancy a new shape Supra but dont know if the Twin turbo or Nat asp will be best, i want a manual and LSD to help so have narrowed the models down to the RZ TT or the SZ NA

does anyone know which is better, or easier to drift with?

Thanks

Not speaking from experience, but i would imagine that the turbo would be easier to light the rears with than the n/a. Although as a car it is rather big and wide, i stand to be corrected but there are non in the D1 championship leading me to think maybe not a great drift car
Your best bet might be an rx7 with a single turbo conversion circa 450 500 bhp! or maybe and M3 EVO

Bit awkward to drift as its sequential turbos unless you plumb it so they are parallel. You'll also need to check carefully its an LSD, some have, some don't!

Thanks

RZ is manual with LSD only risk is it being broken or removed my prevoius owner, as its also a daily driver i didnt want RX7 due to the weaker engine and smaller size, i'm hoping the lenght will not make it too snappy although the Arnage T is a bit of a handful and thats big!

Why not look at a 200SX if you want a road car to use for drifting? You'll get more for your money too Supra is a heavy old barge too! About 1600kg's against the SX's 1250 ish.

I've had both, would use the SX for what you describe!

Not necessarily - RZ's can be auto and with or without an LSD. Each car needs to be checked on an individual basis.

SZ's don't have LSD's I believe, although I think SZ-R's do.

they are running a Supra in the D1 series

http://www.d1gp.co.jp/drivers_machines2005_23orido.html

They are a heavy car and will take some getting used to. I would also try looking at a Skyline GTS as an alternative.

Also worth trying DriftWorks, they have a forum so you can ask for more info on there.

Personally I think a supra with the right setup would be fun for drifting, just takes a little practice to make it work right.

IIRC, the standard car understeers as it was set up like that from the factory to be more numpty freiendly. Uprating/stiffening with adjustables on the back should cure this though.
As for the weight issue, it all comes down to presonal preference. Some like small, light cars, some prefer big heavy barges and use the weight to their advantage, particularly when feinting.

I had an NA and it was great getting the back end out round roundabouts. Tended to oversteer rather than understeer and in my opinion, superb feedback and control. I had 235 tyres allround, rather than slightly wider at the back that is standard which probably loosened the back end up a bit. Much more fun than my current 02 STi apart from the power and turbo kick. It never had traction control, ABS or airbags, a very raw car by todays standards.

A MKIV supra isn't a raw car even by modern standards! LOL!

If you want a kinky turbo'd toyota to drift in, try a manual 2.5 tt Soarer. Bit rare tho.

By raw, I mean no driving aids as listed. A very refined car in many respects, as bits don't fall off (thinking TVR's in comparison) but it was down to the driver to either get out of the sh*t or not get there in the first place. By todays standards, how many cars have no ABS, airbags and no traction control ?......and are worth driving ? The list is quite short unless you include supercars and I can't afford them !!!!

We do a lot of 'tame' drift days with TrackSport- usually using the polished tarmac rally courses at Oulton Park.

It really depends how much money you want to spend. Ultimately you are looking for throttle response rather than outright power, it needs to be very adjustable on the throttle, with no jerks in the powerband.

The proper drifty boys are always running on boost so its ok for them, but for the type of thing we do a 3 or 5 series BMW (best with LSD, although they don't lock as much as I would like. You can drift successfully without the LSD but it can be very difficult as the inside wheel will usually spin the power away).

The Eunos (jap MX5) is a great car for it, as they cost buggesr all to run, are beautifully balanced, and never break.
