Default LOTUS ELISE S1

Has anyone got one of these? I have been offered one in p/x on my scoob. 98S plate, 25000 miles flsh, blue with a few upgrades, throttle body, brakes etc... Are they reliable or are they a typical lotus (loads of trouble usually serious) he said it is worth around £9000, which seems about right. What sort of things do i need to look out for, and what gives the most trouble.

We had one for a few years before the scoob. Ours was bright orange with a Motoruild 160bhp pack, bright orange and had a straight through exhaust system, so attracted alot of attention No problems in 4 years / 10,000 apart from the battery going flat a couple of times, and replacing the cat everytime it went for an MOT. Went through rear tyres pretty quickly aswell! Check for signs of a blown headgasket as that is £1ks of work!

98S with 25k miles for 9k sounds cheap to me!

Excellent cars - amazing handling, and better than you'd expect performance - along with 40mpg!

Check the floors arent corroding if it has those stick-down rubber matts, and do an HPi check as a LOT of these are cat c/d!

I've just sold my 99 (S) S1 with 25k for 10k. Sold it as we've just had our first baby and I didn't really use it that much (1400 miles this year). Just bought an 05 Sti to replace it.

Mine was totally reliable, only needed a steering rack & 2 track rod ends in 5 years of having it. Also runs on fresh air...

Mine was the standard 118bhp (actual 131) So the Sti is quite a bit quicker & has more grip but it's not as throwable & dosen't handle as well. Mine had the Lotus Sports Suspension on it though.

Great fun car but I wouldn't really want to use one everyday, just a bit too raw in the winter for me, mine was summer use only

Whats mods did you have to get the output upto 131? Assuming this is a RR figure?

Theyre ace Corroding floors will be fixed FOC by any Lotus dealer. HGF is a problem, but you shouldnt have to pay more than £500 to get it sorted, I havent. Check it hasnt got the red clutch hose, else you cant change gear in the summer. I think most peoples are reliablish, mine isnt, but theres f all chance of me selling it, as its too much fun As has been said check out SELOC etc for more info. Oh, and I drive mine everyday, and have done 46k miles in 19 months.

Yes that was a RR figure. Only had Janspeed exhaust, Hurricane induction & Cat pipe. evidentally the Rover lump usually makes more than 118 as standard anyway. Didn't RR mine as standard though so not sure what the mods were actually worth.

Currently running a 99 S1 Elise (and a Scenic for the wife and kids ) after 6 different scoobs.

No problems so far (touch wood) only advice would be look at as many as possible and buy on condition not just low mileage. Lots of things generally need replacing around the 5/6 year mark (including the cambelt). Get one that has been fully sorted and everything should be fine.

And don't bother upgrading the stereo as you can't hear it above 15mph

Also remeber to check the weather forecast to see if there is going to be a huge storm if the roof is off

An emergency piece of board can also come in handy

Nice S1. Disagree about the stereo though, I had a small Pioneer sub behind the PAX seat with a decent MP3 HU & had no problems with listening at speed. Not boomy like a normal bass box but just gave it that bass the orininal stereo/speakers lacked...

My (ex) S1:

I saw your (old) car on SELOC Dave, nice, I bet you miss it.

Was kind of joking about the stereo as with a bell and Colvill exhaust on mine I only tend to listen to it in traffic The article in this months Evo mag regarding the Blaupunkt stereo systemdid get me thinking though......

Hay Andy, don't really miss it at the moment as I never used it through the winter anyway but come next spring & it'll be a different story.

I was the same, sometimes I fancied listening to the exhaust, sometimes prefered the stereo Sub was well worth the £100 it cost

Having gone the other way to you (scoob to Elise) I'm finding these damp autumn roundabouts covered in leaves rather interesting

Glad to see you got rid of the gold wheels on your STi!
