Second car to my Type-R
I will be doing alot of motorway miles when I get back to the UK, and have realised that my Impreza WRX STi Type-R might not be so practical. And not to mention the fortune in fuel it will cost me!!
Anybody have any ideas for a decent, cheap runabout?
Must be fuel efficent and be able to clock up plenty of motorway miles.

Depends how much you're looking to spend. A friend of mine has bought a 2/3 year old VW Passat 1.9TDi and gets aroung 56mpg on average with mostly motorway miles + some A roads, every day.
Probably cost you £5-7k for a high mileage one (~100K), with FSH. Should go for 200k miles easy though.
I had an 'N' reg Audi A4 1.8 (petrol) before my scoob that I sold for £2k to a bloke at work, it had 107k miles IIRC and FSH (mostly Audi). I used to get 38mpg for motorway miles and it ran superbly.

Buy cheap it bites you in the **** later.
I bought a 2005 Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 CDTi 150bhp Diesel for £250 per month. Pays for itself per month in savings from the Scoob and the girlfriend doesn't complain that her **** hurt due to the suspension on the Scoob
Warranty etc. etc. and pisses off most cars on the road with the torque.

EASY!
Buy an old citroen, pugeot, renault, or rover 1.7/1.8/1.9 diesel turbo for speed! lol, n/a if you want 65+mpg.... these cars really do fly if you want them too,and if looked after will do 500,000 miles without any major probs....
I have a 1993 citroen bx 1.7td that i use for commuting, it's got over 100 bhp and being made mostly of plastic really does go well,i get 45 mpg min, with its hydroelastic suspension it handles superbly too.... and when you know how you can strip the engine right down and rebuild it in a few hours,(about 3) it makes working on it very easy(diy),or very cheap, if anything goes wrong!
Just my thoughts

don't bother buying another car, and save your cash for petrol.
i do 70 miles a day in the scoob.
i save £165 a year on tax,
£200 a year on servicing,
£30 on mot, no depreciation (on the second car) and the
cost of fuel (in the cheaper car)
against that you have
Higher depreciation on scoob
Fuel cost on scoob
more frequent scoob services
Yeah so it will probably cost me more to do it this way, but the major bonus is i get to enjoy every mile of my journey, and i don't have to sit in a stinking £1000 car which i hate, and that everytime i look at another driver, wish that i could find a "My other car's a WRX" sticker.
keep the CTR as your only car and enjoy it! if necessary get another job to pay for it

I've got a 2.0 Nissan Bluebird you can have for 250. Recent service / cambelt /tyres. 2 owners, every reciept since new, very clean. Only prob' is drivers mirror is smashed off. M.O.T 'till end of year which it would fly through apart from the wing mirror.

I've currently got a Rover 420Di as a 2nd car. Cost £1000 in Feb. It's an R reg and has the usual array of electric toys plus air-con. It does 47-52mpg depending on my driving (and fuel - Shell is much better), and apart from the squeaky wheels and old man image, oh and dull drive, it's a decent(ish) car. Needs the basic oil, filter service each year, and that's about it.
That said, I am looking to get a vRS to replace it next year...
