Default Car for the Wife

Can anyone think of a 4dr hatchback that will do at least 45mpg, low tax band, small engine, cheap insurance and most importantly cheap to buy.

So far we have had a look at a Peugeot 107, Citroen C1, Fiat something or other, and a few 2nd hand VW Polo's. Any others you can think of? preferably new or less than 1yr old for about £8k ?

Cheers

Polo 1.2 5dr soild build, good image low depreciation

Toyota Yaris 5dr 1.3 VVTi, excellent build quality, reliable decent looking for a supermini.

Corsa 1.3 diesel, good build cheap to run, cheap to tax, and cheap to insure.

Honda Jazz, best supermini on the market according to Top gear.

Seat Ibiza/Skoda Fabia 1.9 diesel: like the Polo, but more ecomnomical, and cheaper to buy.

Or if your numbers come in an Audi RS6 estate would be nice. OOh OOh suits you sir

Seat Ibiza 1.9 PD TDi. Recent trip to Germany 63mpg. Nice spec and well built, cheaper to run than a VW equivalent.

my son has a newish Ibiza , but it's a 1.4 petrol. Nice to drive, well put together, well specced and looks nice. He paid £7000 for it with 7000 miles on and only 8 months old.

Kia Picanto and a Hyundai Getz should both be on your list. With the Getz, you get a 5yr warranty and breakdown cover as standard.

Failing that, have a look at what I had as my bargain motor, a Citroen C3 Desire HDi. Very large inside, small outside, brilliantly nimble around town, with very light steering and a good turning circle. 50+mpg in town, 60+mpg average, though I once got 72mpg out of it on a run, and I know some owners had done 78mpg..... Group 3 insurance, ABS, Electric Windows, CD, and Air-Con if you go for a post 53 reg car. Desire is the lowest priced trim with a/c, if you don't want a/c look at the LX, or if she fancies a few more goodies, SX or Exclusive. Servicing is every 12.5k miles, and covering 12k miles a year excluding purchase cost, mine cost £135pm to run (Fuel £70, Insurance £45, Tax £7 and servicing £13)

I'd vote for the Skoda Fabia 1.4 PD75 or the 1.9 PD100 depending on how much u want to pay and whether u need the extra perfromance.

Skoda Fabia - smart looking, good build quality and hold their value very well.

Or Audi A2 maybe? Can be got much cheaper than you'd think - do look a bit odd tho - I wouldnt have one myself even tho I generally like Audi's.

My wife has a Fabia 1.9 TDi PD100. It's a cracking little car to drive, all the controls are light but with a nice feel and it drive's like a much bigger car.
It will get 65mpg+ on a run and even stuck in town traffic will get high 40's.

Standard it's hardly slow, a super mini with 100bhp and 180lbft. Pay a couple of hundred for a tuning box and 130bhp and 200lbft is on the cards.

I bought hers from a car supermarket for £6699, it was an 18month old Comfort model with aircon and only 14k miles.

Cheers
Lee

Citroen C3 1.4 or 1.4/1.6 TD.

Wife gets 58-63 mpg around town in her CE 1.4 16v HDi, and after 18months nothing has gone wrong or fallen off yet, can't really fault it.

Honda Civic, Jazz. Toyota Corolla.

Avoid French cars... check the Top Gear survey to find out why.
