Default 280bhp 4WD Fiat Punto...

http://frankfurt.cars.msn.co.uk/50/news/view_157.htm

Sounds promising if it ever gets a release, no doubt the road going version will be a lot less hardcore.

If they could do that for under 20 grand they would have a winner, cant see it happening either.

Actually here in Italy there have been plenty of declarations by Fiat heads that the new Punto will be entered in the WRC very soon (maybe already in 2006 for development, and then a full championship attempt in 2007), and that a road-going 4wd turbo special edition will be made.
If we remember what the Fiat Group did in the late '80s early '90s with the Delta Integrale ... let's hope.
Apparently the objectives of the group are:
Ferrari - F1
Maserati - GT
Alfa - touring cars
Fiat - WRC
Lancia - ??? (they are like the neglected child of the group, and have been for some years now).

I do remember reading somewhere that Fiat did actually make a Puntograle a long time ago but think it must have only been a one off.

I thought Fiat/Lancia/Alfa/Ferrari were just about one now and have been for a long time

It certainly sounds interesting anyway, 4WD and a decent base engine in a car of that size will have serious potential!

Isnt this for a new section in world rallying to allow other manufacturers to get in without the astronomical cost of wrc?

They were seriously trying to engage Valentino Rossi to drive at least a few races, so I think it's a pretty expensive project
