Default Golf Gti MK4 1.8t any good?

As above really, thinking of selling the scoob for something a bit more economical. I had a golf mk4 1.6se before the sti 4, was abit unreliable to say the least.
In my 3 years of owning the golf from new, I experienced an alarm number of, shall we say, teething problems; valve tappet, wheel speed sensor, heated seat module, rear speaker and an alarm that liked to go off when it felt like it!

All of the problems were fixed under warrenty, but you don't buy a golf to reserve a space the dealership!

When it was working, I found the golf a very nice car to drive. Just would like to hear other people's history with the 1.8t 150bhp model.

Cheers.

Chris.

My mate has one. They are nice to drive just dont feel quick really and you dont get much of a kick when the turbo comes in. Ive heard of people chipping them and getting good power gains for about 500 quid.
My friend has had no problems with his in almost 2 years of ownership

Good motorway or cruising car as standard but they're not an inspiring car in the bends - feel a bit "lardy" as standard

I've had 2 and love them.

A 1.8T and a 1.8T Anniversary edition (180BHP) try and get one of these if you can, Stunning 18" BBS wheels as standard with a nice kit. IMHO they look lovely.

Don't expect Scooby performance or handling but still plenty of fun to be had and fantastic on a run.

Can't fault em

if your willing to spend around the 1.5k mark on a remap, suspension mods, and exhaust then the golf would be just as quick as a standard impreza turbo.......well not off the mark, but when in gear should easily be as quick.

If your into tuning the 1.8t engine can be increased to 300bhp on a standard engine/internals safely without sacrificing engine reliability.

300bhp 1250kg golf would hammer a subaru impreza through the gears.......just not through the bends. You can get the 1.8t up to 400bhp for a few grand more but i reckon it would be just too much for the chassi.

if you fancy looking to see what can be done with a mk4 golf check out this bloke site......his car is bloody mental (check out the vids)
