Question New Golf GT TSI - 1.4 and 168bhp!

Sounds interesting.

Does anyone know the specs for the new 1.4 motor. Is this an ultra light alternative to the K series that we can expect to see in Caterhams and alike soon?

Its a very complicated lump. The Golf installation on looks tidy as the engine is mainly hidden behind plastic covers.

As for it being in Caterhams et all, nahh, its got some very complicated plumbing that doesn't lend itself to neat and tidy applications in a Caterham.

On another note, this engine is going into the Golf GT, the new almost GTI version of the range, but its going to sell for the same money as the Focus ST which I have written about. So when the choice is a 170hp 1.4 Golf that needs 98ron to get full power, or the 225hp Focus for similar money, hmm what to choose..........

98 RON only - thats a bit odd. We don't have it at the pumps like Europeons. What are those Germans up to now <rolleyes !

It needs 98ron to make the 170hp/167bhp. Without it, the ignition will be retarded and the power slightly reduced. Its the same with all the VAG FSI engines, and with most if not all BMW engines. Neither company makes a big deal out of it obviously, but running on 95 ron, their engines do not make the quoted figures..........

There's an in depth preview on Vortex:

I think it will make a reasonable warm hatch, and seems to be aimed at reduced emissions as much as performance. They are also doing a 170ps diesel GT apparently.

As a Golf fan, it's a car I wouldn't rule out if I were looking for a capable, sensible hatch with reasonable running costs.
