i thought that the burble was from the un-equal length headers????
so say on a chavalier if u got a 4 branch and made outlet 2 & 4 about 1 1/2 longer, then u would have un-equal legth headers and would get a burble?
i think

There is a Fiesta round here that DOES sound like a scooby.
I'd say she has a knackered exhaust valve and the thing has tappets as noisy as a average scooby (fanstastic HCS engine - Ford at their best ) ....It runs on 3 cylinders - and thus makes the off-beat burble that some people think is is so "wonderful"
As "wonderful" as the sound of most v8 engines is caused by the dual plane crank causing uneven firing spacings, crap for power and valvetrain, but friendly for balance, smoothness and "marginal" reliability. Much like un equal length headers...it's a compromise of engineering, I don't like compromises

My mates XR2 turbo has a custom twin exit exhaust system which has unequal length pipes which burbles quite nicely on idle. Kinda sounds like a standard scooby!!!
