We have fitted a 1.9 engine into a 1.6 GTi and after maby hours of knuckle scratching at the weekend, have ended up with the following "problems" (only small things):

1) Oil pressure gauge not working.
2) Speedo not working.

Any ideas as we are stumped..........

I'm only guessing here but regarding the speedo. The cable runs to the box? Isn't the 1.6 and 1.9 box different? could this be part of the problem?

Oil pressure gauge - clean the connections on the gauge senders, front of the block and also clean out the brown multiplug near the gearbox.

Speedo - both 1.6 and 1.9 boxes are the same design so should work. Just make sure the cable is pushed in far enough and that you have replaced the rubber pin that holds it in. Other than that you will need to check the back of the clocks which is a crapper of a job.

We are thinking on the same with regard to the connection at the box end.

I think we got so kackered on Sunday evening we gave up.

I will have another attempt this evening......
