the air con on my 97 V70CD barely reaches 'fairly cool', and my daughter nearly fried in her car seat yesterday. Is this normal for these cars, or does it need servicing?

Sounds like it may just need re-gas'ing.

Might be worth a re-gas but my old V40 T4's aircon wasn't much cop even from brand new. Better than no aircon at all, but even on full-blast cold it was a gentle cooling breeze rather than the Arctic blizzard I get from my Passat's climate.

Put it this way -- after 5 mins on full cold over the weekend, even my wife was saying "can you warm the air up a bit"

My V70 blasts ice at us, so I'd say you have something wrong.
