Is a Porsche for 6k Realistic?
Im thinking of a Porsche to replace my Impreza Sport, I am looking at a budget of 6k is this a realistic for an 80s Porsche? It will be a daily driver for a while and i don't really want a wreak just for the sake of having a Porsche. I know there is a few owners on here so your comments will be useful cost of running and servicing especially. Ive been doing some initial pricing this morning and will probably looking at 944, 928 and perhaps a 911 although these seem to command premium.
Your thoughts are welcome.

A good 944 for £6k is very realistic. I would steer clear of a 911 because frankly for that money you are looking at a restoration project. I'd avoid the 928 because it's a more complex machine, will have higher running costs and they have something of a bad rep for electrical gremlins.
You'll have your pick of a few 944's for £6k, late 2.7 Lux's, S2's and early turbos. The cars are all generally well built and reliable, but there are a number of points to check - cambelt/balance-shaft belts, engine mounts, water pumps etc. Best to talk to a specialist or get a buyers guide.
I bought a 1989 944 2.7 lux back in 1996 and ran it for 2.5 years. My father still has the car, so it's been in the family for 9 years now. In all that time it's never missed a beat and apart from routine servicing has only needed a new battery and a new suspension part due to a cracked plastic cup around the ball joint. The quality of construction is probably better than most other cars, and with its regular coats of zymol it still looks better than most cars on the road today!
Servicing is every 12 months or 12000 miles on a 944 (with interium 6000 mile oil changes on a turbo). You're looking at £200-300 from a specialist. The big 'belts' service is every 4 years or 48000 miles and is probably about £500 from a specialist nowadays.

If you are good at getting a deal you might get a late S2 for that, although I guess it will need work doing.
You should get an early 220bhp turbo for that money.
If you budget £1500 a year for maintenance, you are not far off the mark.
