Default Symptoms of Slipping Clutch?

I have somehow managed to avoid clutch problems in 10 years of driving so have no idea what the signs are

Anyway, the g/f's Clio 172 seems to be falling apart at the moment. Just had the new exhaust put on and now there is a huge flat spot from 4,000 to 5,000 rpm. Lots of revs, no increase in speed. Is this a sign of a slipping clutch?

I had a look underneath and the exhaust isnt blowing, so dont think its that.

Cant think of anything else it could be.

Lots of creaking coming from the bottom area of the steering column as well, presume this means a new one?

No experience of clios im afraid but that certainly sounds like clutch slip to me!
Sometimes you can also smell the clutch slipping. Can you actually see the revs increase as you accelerate under load (ie up a hill) but no increase in speed? If so I would say it was the clutch.

oops...cupramax beat me to it!

Yes, revs go right up, but speed stays the same for near enough the full 1,000 rpm. I wouldn't mind, but its only done 16k miles FFS . Granted most of that has been in town.

thats really weird, my mates clio has done 5 trackdays, a few RWYB days and 30k miles and hes still on the original clutch, doing another trackday at the weekend!!

but your problem definitely sounds like the clutch is slipping mate!

I'm starting to think we should get rid, but there's a new Kitchen and Bathroom on their way, so no money for car changes

Its been great for 2 years, but now everything seems to be going **** up at the same time. Front disks aren't looking too clever either

Clutch life depends on how you treat it. If you slip it a lot esp in traffic/town driving then it'll wear quickly. Treat it well with well timed gearchanges and swift and smooth clutch action and it'll last a long time.

Its funny actually, when we first got it I kept telling her not to sit at junctions slipping the clutch, especially on hills . She doesn't exactly stick to speed limits either

Oh well, its off to the renault sport forum to see how much this is likely to cost

Ah **** it, the engine has to come out. Over 7 hours to fit and Renault are likely to charge £800 - £900.

My missus does this, sits on hills in her Sharan, held deftly by the clutch, I have tried explaining whats actually happening but cars are too good at isolating muppets from the mechanical mayhem going on underneath their feet so the first you hear about it is the garage bill. At least the old Capris and the like used to let out a noxious smell when you abused the clutch.

Put car in first. Handbrake on hard. Engage the gear. Car should pull on the handbrake and revs should be reletive to your accelerator/clutch usage. It's blindingly obvious if the clutch is foocked.

Well I thought my clutch was slipping, then I had to nail the car (FTO GPX) to get out of a sticky situation and it was fine again, I think it's my clutch cable stretched or something to do with the thrust plate.

Any ideas anyone?
