Petrol or Diesel?

Petrol or Diesel?
Hello,
I need help. I can't decide which to go for.
Ford Focus 1.8 petrol OR Ford Focus 1.8 TDI. Not the new one, about 2 - 3 old.
I do lots of motorway driving but also quite a bit of city driving.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Kate

Here's what Evo mag said about the TDCi focus in 2002:

The TDCi is a common-rail diesel -- the diesel pump pushes the fuel at high pressure into the fuel "rail" (around 1200 -- 1500 bar) and the injectors are fed direct off the rail. It also has multi-phase injectors which can deliver several squirts of fuel per combustion stroke.
The TDDi is exactly the same block etc but different fuel system. This direct injection system runs at lower pressure and isn't as clever, so power, torque and economy are worse.

I would suggest you test drive a couple (i.e TDCi, ZETEC, GHIA) and get a feel for which one is the best for your driving style etc. Zetec is probably your best bet for a sporty ride, whilst Ghia is a smoother more luxury ride.
Ive had a 1.8 Zetec (petrol) for a while now, and it has given me no problems at all, and returns around 33-35mpg. Planning to sell it soon though, in order to get something quicker like a MY99 classic scooby.
Diesels make a lot of sense if you do lots of mileage, though i dont know exactly how many miles you need to do to make a diesel option more cost effective than a petrol one?
Great car the focus, whichever one you get you will not regret it.
