Diesel cars to run 'alternative' fuel on?

Diesel cars to run 'alternative' fuel on?
A mate and I were discussing what diesel car could run on cooking oil, red diesel and heating oil with no problems.
I suggested a Pug 306TD, but I was not sure of the HDI due to its injectors may clog up.
He sugested a MK3 Golf TD.
Are there any pitfalls on running the above cars on the above fuels apart from the tax man getting a hold of you?

Pitfalls?
You will smell like a mobile chippy! When top gear did it they recommended IIRC using 'used' cooking oil.
When they did it though they totally drained the car of diesel and ran it on cooking oil totally and they did not say whether you can run a mix.

It would need to be an older generation machine, one of the old 90 / 110bhp VAG TDis or a non-common rail French jobby, or one of the older Ford TDis ..... probably best to use an additive like Millers as well to give the diesel pump the lubrication it needs.

Funily enough i have been thinking about this, and having just done a google search i found this:
"One driver, who did not want to be named, said: "I've halved my motoring costs since I started running my diesel Subaru on cooking oil. The car runs just as well and even smells a lot better than diesel."
I didn't think subaru did a diesel?
I would get something older than above, like a non turbo 205 or something ?

You MUST have a car with a Bosch fuel pump; Lucas pumps just cant cope with the high viscosity of vegetable oil. MERCEDES will run on anything.

It isnt legal to use virgin vegetable oil and pay the duty Im afraid. For a reason I dont recall the oil has to have been used, although there isnt a particulalrly strong definition for 'use'.
Currently you can register as a fuel producer (and pay duty on production at source) but there are moves afoot to prevent this; and this from a 'green transport' party, my ****!

Early 306 use Lucas pumps, later models use Bosch. My old 96 'N' had a bosch pump, but its easy to see which is which, as they are right in front of you when you lift the bonnet.

I understand from 'Ze Germans' that any old diesel Mercedes will run on vegetable oil straight out of ASDA's car park.
Used cooking oil has to be filtered btw; if its from a chippy yo have to remove the animal fat which contaminates it, as well as the chip-bits.....
