Default Need a half respectable pocket rocket up to 5k

Heres the sitatuation.

bought a scoob, did 340hp, sold it, lost a load of money
bought a fabia vrs, saved loads on running costs but now bored
want a 5k'ish car which is not too old but can pack a punch or possibly have a turbo bolted on and run reliably all day long for around 5k

Old school tuned Civic VTI, heard of plenty of these being rather quick once moving but dont know how reliable?

Fiesta and Escort RS are just too boy racer for me, used to own a Fiesta RS 3 cars ago

Other than something "different" it looks like i'll just buy a 4-5k focus zetec and put up with that, they dont exactly pack a punch but are reliable, bigish and half respectable!

Just throwing this one open to ideas really.

you can get an early Mk1 Clio 172 for about 5 grand-ish now, might have high miles on it though.

:edit: just looked on the autotrader site and theres quite a few on there for 5K some with good miles too

Did the Satria GTI ever have an Air Con option? I found one 2 miles from my house on auto trader for £4,995, and I quite like the look of those, nice and rare too

The MG ZR 160's are coming in at 6k ish which is too much, want to pocket 5k from this ideally.

The old 172's are coming in at 5.9k which is interesting, i'd consider that an upgrade

Whats a 306 GTI-6 like

Bog standard Gtir They tend to be most reliable. (although some tuned ones can be too)

Big punch and should be available for £5K or less.

Bugger, just seen the not to old bit. That's them out of the window then.

I justed signed up on the Honda Revolutions forum, hearing good things from them and others about the 6th generation Civic VTi (think thats the one they did a Jordan ltd edition of), 160hp as standard and like comper100 says, seem to be reliable and pretty lively

Wonder what it would take to get one to 200hp, I've seen soooo many videos online of these civics pulling away on the motorway from some seriously quick cars.

In fact, I got done by one in the Hatfield tunnel when I was running 300hp in my scoob and I was showing off next to a mates car, i was making loads of noise (like you do in tunnels) and I heard something EVEN louder coming, he literally pulled up next to me at 70mph, waved, and left me for dead, and I mean seriously left me! at 70mph thats very impressive!!!

Of course I caught up when we got off the A1 and went up on to that nice bit of the A414, other wise known as the twisties *yawn* hey i dont own a scoob anymore

MK2 Rev 3 MR2 turbo.

I drive to work every morning with a smile on my face!
Its a great "fun" car, and you'll easily get one for 5k.

Oops, I forgot to add "practical", but agreed, that aside the MR2 turbo sounds like a lot of fun for not much money

20V Turbo, VW MK4 Golf, 150bhp, chip it to 210bhp for £500 later after you get itchy feet. 80k examples for 5k no problem, solid reiliable GTi, still has the looks and the go and will not cost you a lot of money to run. Cupra a maybe too. 30- 40pmg and still goes well. Old VR6 would be nice ... if it has all the stamps and lower miles...

or as someone already said a GtiR - i still dont understand why people think they are unreliable, ive only ever known highly modified ones to be problematic. thats like the pulsar guys saying ALL scoobs have chocolate pistons.

Was going to suggest Honda Vti when I read the threah title! Honda Revs is a good forum. I drive a 96-98 Civic and its been extremely reliable so far. I don't think you'll get to 200bhp easily, as they're highly tuned already

My other suggestion would be a 106 Rallye. Pick up a nice one for less than £5k. Perhaps not too reliable. Maybe a Saxo VTS if you can get past the image?

Those would be my choices

not quite true.... the Cupra will indeed remap to around 200 (prob just under/on) but an early Mk4 Golf won't - you will be lucky to get 190 TBH - mine got to 172bhp - how gutted was i?!?!?! Torque will be 220lb/ft + on the cars though which is effotless to use. You need a 2001 Golf onwards to achieve 200+bhp (Jabbasport can *apparentlly* get these to 230bhp with exhaust & remap)

I would also say to avoid the Mk4 Golf anyway - boring to drive. Been there and done that. Ibiza cupra is a lot more fun - although becoming the boy racer car of choice due to cheap and turbo - but they don't work with atmos DVs so no woosh noice

I am hunting for a VR6 now and as soon as my Accord Type R is sold I'll be snapping one up (again - had a Mk3 16v GTI and a Mk3 VR6 before - both a lot more enjoyable than the Mk4 was!)

Forget the Rover, the engines disentegrate, have a BRM sat on the drive as testament to that, pity really as it was a fun car, repaced with a Saab 9-3 LPT, four grand for a 2001 Y with FSH, 150 bhp as standard and it feels quicker than 150 bhp, doesnt exactly feel that much slower than my Fiat Coupe turbo plus you can get the ECU replaced replaced and it goes to 225 bhp !

Handles quite nicely too, and when its chipped, what a sleeper on its plastic wheel disks !

I know its a bit older & not as quick as some, but you can get a good Clio Williams 1 - 3 for that sort of money, handles great, still turns heads and will hardly depreciate. Just a thought.
