Default 106 GTi head gasket gone...

My mates 106's head gasket has gone, is this the end of it?

Are we looking at stupid money here to get it fixed?

Wouldn't have thought it'd cost much more than about £300 from a non main dealer garage. It's not that hard to do it yourself

As Paul said, it should only cost around 300 to get this fixed, assuming he's not carried on driving it for long and let the engine overheat.

A head gasket went on my old Ax GTi a few years back, only cost less than £300 to fix on such a small engine, but that was a 1.4 8v injection, so your 16v might be a bit more.

No, the 106 rarely needs skimming after the HG goes... cheap to sort...

Just bought our lass a 1.3 Rallye with head gasket gone. £90 for a pressure tested and skimmed head delivered, £35 for bits and pieces and do it myself sometime.

Easy job. I think this might be a 8v engine though. The guy before ran it a few times before it overheated so thought might as well go for a new head.

Jon.

Just done one on my Rover, job didnt work because its either got a cracked head or the liners have sunk, thereofre the cooling system is presurising. The Rovers are notorious for it, on a less fussy engine its not that bad. My Autodata software quotes just short of seven hours for the same job on the Saxo, maybe a little longer if you change the cam belt while its apart. Its easy enough to check whether the head has warped, get a steel rule and lay it across the head at different angles, the pattern of a Union Jack, shine a torch from behind and if you see tlight its warped, you can use a feeler guage to see whether its in tolerance.

Be careful to time it up correctly and then turn the engine over a couple of times via the crankshaft pulley to make sure nothing connects.
