Tops off for £15k - Discuss
As spring is well and truly in the air, I am craving that top down experience once more. Question is what to buy?
Do I go all out and get something totally impractilcle but big fun (Elise/TVR/Caterham) or something a little more practicle but still fun (S2000/Boxster) or finally very practicle with a hint of fun (A4 Cab)?
We already have a Seat Leon Cupra R & a Focus TDi on the drive and 1, probably the Seat, will be sacrificed to make way for the ???????????.
Views please.

I would personally have a S2000 for 2 seat drop top fun, the Elise comes a close 2nd, then a Mazda MX5. For a 4 seat drop top a BMW 328 Cabriolet, A4 2.8 Cab then a nice CLK 320. All can be got for 15k all under 50k and no older than 6 years old.

It would be s2000 for me also at that sort of money.......

Well I picked this up on Saturday, top down real sports car motoring and you'd have quite a few grand to spare on something else

Yep saw it too, that one that james may drives is absolutely mint probably worth 12k+ but you would never lose money on it. Straight six 150HP and they sound awesome! Apparently there was another TG where a TR6 went head to head with an S2000 and won! It was to do with torque vs revs I think, I havent seen it so dont know the full details, to be honest I would expect the honda to win any day of the week.

Honda looks favorite then.
Only downside for me is that i've already owned one, a Black MY01, in 2003 so nothing new to experience. It is a very good car though hence considering another. Looking on Autotrader there are plenty to go at.
Who wants a Leon Cupra R for £12k then?????

That would be the one in my new clarkson video where off the line the TR6 puts on a 10+ car length lead on the S2000. Uh-huh! Just so you know, a bleeding modena can't put a 10 car length lead on a S2000 by 80mph so I suspect it was fixed. In the race the honda wins cause they use a cheapy smoke screen effect to show that the TR6 blew up

If it's just a weekend car and would never be needed for anything else except fun and trackdays (+ occassional other trips, but not daily), I'd go with the caterham or equivalent. S2000 is obviously much nicer as a day to day proposition, but there's no beating the lightweight proper sportscar experience for manic driving fun in the right conditions. If it's the car you have to commute daily in, S2000/boxster would win. Elise (or VX220) would come in between the two - livable day to day, but less so than the Honda. More of a "real" sports car, but less raw than the caterham.

How much will the prices of the S2000 go up as the weather improves? Currently I'm banking on spending £17-18k which will get you a low mileage mint condition MY02 that has been well looked after. These tend to be advertised at £17995ono in the trader so I guess can be had for £17500. What would such a car cost in say May/June?

Just to add another car into the list, how about an MR2 (new shape)?Should be cheaper than an S2000 and apparently a very good car.

If you crave a "real" driving experience then the Elise/Caterham line is no brainer IMHO. Have owned my Elise since last October now and its surprisingly more practical than I expected. The only hassle is the climb in an out. Other than that its a pure joy to drive.

Not sure on the increases, but they seem to be selling like hotcakes. I missed 2 cars within hours of them appearing on the trader...
MR2 is sooooo slow its unreal. No elec roof either?

Personally if I was spending that kind of money on a 2-seat ragtop I'd have a look at something like a MY99 2.7 Boxster - safe residuals, good handling and fanny-magnet pose value

Nice one, I wouldnt mind seeing it thats for sure unless it was race prepped TR6 of course, mate of mine runs one with 270hp!
For me I think they (s2k, boxster) are too refined and too common but hey thats just my view! enjoy!

How about what I owned before the scoob came along?
Sold it to a REAL hairdresser in the end.
Stay away from nitrous though. The pistons in mine didn't like it much.

Ok, depends on what you define as common. Just about every car on the road is 'mass produced' but there are clearly common cars (focus, golfs etc.) and uncommon cars (S2000's, Aston martins etc.) The S2000 is rarer than 95% of other cars on the road so that makes it uncommon in my book. Of course EVERYTHING is common compared to some 60's car but that would make my westie 'common' as they make more of them each year than there are TR6's left in the country.
Anyway, my 'perception' of a common car are one's I see every day or week. Given where I work in central london and the fact that I see Ferraris, porsches, maserati's every day makes them common in my book but maybe that's not representative.

Got ya, yes I didnt mean common as in I see more s2000's than ford focus (focii?? ) should have been more clearer and you're right its more to do with location, I dont see too many ferraris here in rural bedfordshire!
