Default Alfa Romeo diesel?

I need a diesel car for my 80 mile round trip to work and I have been looking at the Alfa diesel range.

Most of these are the 2.4JTD or the 1.9.

A few questions.......
Are these cars reliable or are they nightmares to own?
Are they economical?
Any other hints or tips?

TIA

Scott

there have been some issues with earlier models, but the later engines are absolutely reliable. If you are in search of high MPG, buy a german diesel... alfa's diesels are not as economical as its german counterparts (they are still more economical then petrol though), but they are much sportier... if you get 2.4JTD you will even be rewarded with a decent sound of V5 - you will never get this sound out fo any german diesel (although BMW's diesels are OK) - Alfa always sounds great, no matter what engine is under the bonnet

are you after used car or new one?

I would want a used one as I know the depreciation (sp?) on these cars is very heavy on the first owner.
What kind of MPG are we looking at on a 1.9JTD/2.4JTD?

AR156 1.9JTD (140hp) averages 44mpg, drops to 34mpg when driven REALLY HARD
AR156 2.4JTD (175hp) averages 35mpg, dops to 20-22mpg when driven hard

these are my numbers based on 80% urban, 20% x-urban... if you commute long distances you will achieve much better mpg (50+ mpg for 1.9JTD on motorway run)

Well the 1.9 sounds the one for me, as most of my journy is motorway at very quiet hours as I work shifts.

I dont think there will be much performance difference between the 1.9 and 2.4 but I satnt to be corrected :-)

What other cars does Alfa/Fiat put the 1.9JTD in?

the only big difference between 1.9 and 2.4 is the sound. 1.9 sounds like real diesel whereas 2.4 sounds a bit more "petrol-like"... on motorway they will perform quite equally, on B-roads 2.4 will be faster but thats not so important for you I guess...
you can achieve much better mpg with 1.9JTD and thats probably your main criteria

you can find 1.9JTD only in Alfa 156 (90-140hp), Alfa 147 (90-140hp) and Fiat Stilo (80-115hp)... they offer it also in MPVs and vans but you are probably not interested in those

doh, forgot about Alfa Romeo GT, that one has 1.9 too
