Had a go in one of these earlier. Very nice car.
Does anyone know what A road overtaking is like in one, road was too busy to try and it was so comfortable it was like driving a cloud.
I have a 140bhp Golf diesel, and if anything like that will be a winner.

Yeah I've driven a couple of these and they are excellent cars. In fact the geartronic autos are better than the manuals if you can get one. Mega relaxing to drive. Think they have about 165hp and 250lb/ft so plenty of poke when on the go and are superb on long motorway journeys. If I was a few years older I'd be tempted to get one

The D5 engine is a very nice drive, although it's not as quick as it feels. I test-drove the S60 D5 manual back-to-back with the Passat PD130, and although the D5 motor is much smoother and sounds great, it's a bit slower through the gears.
As the D5 emissions were higher, I went with the VAG tractor

Cupramax's comments sound about right. Had an XC70 D5 Geartronic on hire for a week last week and did about 800miles. Very relaxing car to drive, very waftable without being too wallowy. Acceptable overtaking poke, the initial 'lunge' tailing off but by then you were usuallly past and pulling back in. Nice change of pace from the Impreza. Slighty disappointing fuel consumption about 35mpg, although the extra ride height and 4WD might explain that one.

Tested the D5 against 2.5 T and D5 just didnt quite have as much as I expected. I went for the Petrol 2.5 T in the end as I wanted the extra power. But against the non-turbo model I would choose the D5 definitely.
